Over Simon’s 25-year career in transportation, few moments have been as rewarding as the long-awaited reopening of the Northumberland Line. This passenger rail route in North East England was closed in the mid-1960s, but thanks to the efforts of Simon and his project partners, reopened to the public in 2024 — providing residents with faster, more sustainable access to Newcastle-upon-Tyne. “Our role on Northumberland has been influential, varied and a fantastic example of the range of expertise we have and the power of bringing this together to deliver a transformative outcome,” he writes. We recently partnered with ISHERWOOD + ELLIS LLP on a series of major healthcare projects for the Belfast Health and Social Care Trust. The latest commission, the new Northern Ireland Children’s Hospital, has been given formal approval with work beginning imminently. In addition to architecture, our teams are providing NEC project management, civil, structural, interior design and landscape architectural services on the project. ? “This state-of-the-art hospital is an important addition to Northern Ireland’s health estate, enabling the best-quality care possible while making a demonstrable contribution towards its ambitious sustainability goals," said Trevor Leaker, our Head of Architecture and Design, UK & Ireland. "In line with its design and art strategy, the hospital has been shaped to fill the wards with natural daylight, with rooms sitting on the upper floors so children have views over the Belfast hills and beyond. ? “It was essential that the design didn’t compromise on quality care, putting children and their families at the very heart of them. The internal spaces thoughtfully consider the diverse needs of children of all ages, incorporating a blend of calming, playful and age-appropriate environments that work together to foster a positive and healing environment for young patients.” ? “From the very beginning of the project, in all our design decisions we have adopted the concept of ‘The Child First and Always’," said Kenneth Fleming at Isherwood + Ellis. "Going into hospital for any reason is not easy, particularly for children and their families. It was therefore vital that the new building did not feel intimidating or institutional whilst not compromising clinical needs. Like any hospital, we wanted to create a place of healing, ensuring that patients, their families and staff feel comfortable and safe at all times." In our latest Deep Dive blog, Process Mechanical Lead, Tom Fini, P.E., CDT, shares his work on a major water infrastructure improvement project in New York City:?the Avenue U Pumping Station rehabilitation. Pumping stations play a critical role in protecting public health and maintaining environmental standards by ensuring the safe, reliable flow of wastewater and stormwater. That means they must remain in operation even during rehabilitation. For Tom and his team, that posed a key challenge — one they tackled through deft engineering and a dedication to collaboration. “As the design manager, I played a central role in coordinating with the client, contractors, and other stakeholders to develop an innovative bypass system that is both constructible and resilient,” writes Tom.
