Meet Mercedes Washington — director of Patient Safety for the Aurora Health Care Central Wisconsin Area and Behavioral Health Service Line. Mercedes reflects on her career journey from her early desire to make a difference to nursing and mentoring others: “Growing up, I was inspired by my mother, a single teen mom and a dedicated CNA, who tirelessly balanced her profession with raising my twin sister and me. Observing her compassion and commitment to her work, I realized from a young age that I wanted to help people just as she did. As a first-generation college student, I faced numerous challenges, but my unwavering desire to make a difference propelled me forward. Becoming a Registered Nurse was the culmination of my lifelong aspiration to provide care and support to those in need. My leadership role has provided the opportunity to transition from direct patient care to mentoring others and improving processes for delivering exceptional care. As a director of Patient Safety, I have significant influence on the well-being of patients and colleagues. Although they may never meet me or know my name, it is satisfying to know that my work contributes to making our health care system safer for future patients. Every day, I am reminded of the magnitude of empathy, resilience and dedication. These values, instilled in me by my mother, continue to drive my commitment to health care.”

Meet Sheila Bennett — senior vice president & chief of Patient Services at Atrium Health Floyd. Sheila reflects on how her career took her from nursing to her current leadership role, and shares how she sets an example for the people in her life: “I knew from an early age that I wanted to be a nurse, and I was fortunate to pursue that passion. I began my nursing career 40 years ago, starting as an LPN in 1980 and then becoming an RN in 1984. Prior to that, I worked in a yarn mill from age16 to 22, where a coworker who was attending LPN school guided and inspired me to enroll in nursing school. Becoming a nurse was a life-changing achievement, as it opened doors that may not have otherwise been available to me. As the first person in my family to graduate from college, I was able to set an example that encouraged my children, nieces and nephews to further their own education. I’m a servant leader, who is honored to intersect in people’s lives when they need support the most. I love health care because we meet people where they are, in all walks of life, in an inclusive and non-judgmental manner. In almost 41 years, I have never lost my love for patients and families.”

Meet Michelle Boyd — director of Health Careers & Workforce Development at the Atrium Health South Piedmont Area Health Education Center. Michelle shares what deepens her passion for her career in health care: “For the past 20 years, I've worked with Atrium Health, currently serving as the director of Health Careers & Workforce Development at the South Piedmont Area Health Education Center. My team and I focus on creating impactful workforce development initiatives and professional development programs, from planning conferences to enriching high school and college students. I chose health care because I want to do my part to help strengthen our workforce and foster an environment where everyone feels welcome. It also aligns with my values, fills my cup and makes me leap out of bed each morning because it provides a sense of purpose. One of my most memorable experiences was organizing a statewide conference that connected 200 health science students with eager employers right here in Charlotte. It’s moments like this that deepen my passion for health care.”

When disaster strikes, Advocate Health is often called upon to step up in a big way. A new white paper, "The Vital Role of Large Health Systems in Disaster Recovery: Lessons from Helene," details how our team quickly mobilized to support affected communities in the aftermath of last year’s hurricane, deploying a wide range of air- and ground-based health care services. When the country’s largest supplier of IV fluids shut down, we used a range of clinical practice changes and real-time data dashboards to manage inventory, reducing usage by 55% in less than two weeks so that no procedures had to be canceled – and carried forward learnings that can help us and other health systems reduce the cost of care delivery. Meet Julie Kane — director of Quality & Regulatory at Advocate Sherman Hospital. Julie shares how she makes hard work enjoyable and fosters an environment where everyone can succeed: “As the director of Quality & Regulatory, my primary responsibility is guiding others to implement changes that ensure our patients receive the high-quality care they deserve. While this can be challenging, I believe in making the hard work enjoyable, which is why I’ve dubbed myself the "Director of Fun." It’s not unusual to spot me around the organization in costumes, bringing some levity to the important work we do. I attribute my professional success to the mentors who have supported and guided me throughout my journey. The phrase ‘culture eats strategy for breakfast’ serves as a reminder to me that my dedication to supporting others is focused on fostering an environment where everyone can succeed.”
