The Cardiac and Pulmonary Rehab at Advocate South Suburban Hospital recently hosted a celebration to honor Veterans Day. Patients who are veterans, or have family members who are veterans, brought in photos to the clinic and had the opportunity to share their own stories with teammates they have gotten to know throughout their care. The participating patients were cheered on in recognition as they entered their class session. We extend our profound gratitude to our veterans and active-duty military members. Your courage, dedication and sacrifices are invaluable. Thank you for your service!

Advocate Health Care patient Colleen Dardis is a fighter. ?? Colleen was diagnosed with stage III colon cancer 50 years old following a routine colonoscopy, where doctors found several polyps. She was shocked as she had no symptoms leading up to the routine screening. And this wasn't Colleen's first bout with cancer - in her 20's, she was diagnosed and treated for Hodgkin lymphoma, the first cancer that she fought and beat. Colleen received all her care for colon cancer at Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center, where she endured surgeries and chemotherapy. Colleen, now cancer-free for one year, took the field at the Chicago Bears game to help unfurl the Bear Down flag as part of the pre-game ceremony, while also celebrating her own milestone. You inspire us, Colleen!

The cousins arrived earlier than expected; Catherine's son was due October 25 and Brianna's daughter was due October 28. The babies are now one month old and thriving at home. Advocate Health Care patient Gary Brown took to the field to help unfurl the flag at Soldier Field in the Chicago Bears Bear Down Flag Ceremony. ???? Gary became a patient at the Cardiometabolic Clinic at Advocate Sherman Hospital after being he had triple bypass surgery more than two years ago. Since Gary started going to the clinic earlier this year, he no longer needs to take insulin or use a CPAP machine. He also started using his smart watch to monitor his sleep and found his sleep has improved. The clinic offers patients with cardiovascular disease and pre-diabetes or diabetes a comprehensive approach to managing their conditions – with a number of specialties in one convenient location. Patients who are referred to the clinic are seen by a multidisciplinary care team, which can include a cardiologist, dietitian/diabetes educator, health coach, pharmacist, medical weight management specialist, patient navigator and behavioral health professional. Gary said since visiting the clinic and the care he received there, he has more energy, fewer headaches and is experiencing less hip, joint and back pain. “Going to the cardiometabolic clinic has been an amazing, life-changing experience,” Gary said. “The entire team has looked at everything, from nutrition, to physical activity, to what conditions I have, alternatives and what prescriptions I am taking. They have helped me through everything and made my health feel important.” You inspire us, Gary!
