A high school project led Swati Bavisi to Kathleen Muglia. Decades later, they are caring for patients together at Advocate Children’s Hospital. “I needed to shadow someone in a science-based career,” explains Swati, Director of Advanced Practice Clinical Operations at Advocate Children’s Hospital. “I always knew I would go into health care but wasn’t sure what role until shadowing Kathleen, the nurse practitioner at my primary care physician’s office. I went home that day and started looking up colleges with programs.” Kathleen, a pediatric nurse practitioner at Advocate Children’s Hospital, remembers her first meeting with Swati well. “Seeing her at a conference years later was one of the most joyous moments of my career,” she says. “As a pediatric nurse practitioner, I’m a health care provider, advocate, forever student and educator,” Swati explains. “We have a variety of specialties, and each role has different responsibilities. We're here to expand patient access and make sure they're receiving the best care.” “A pediatric nurse practitioner has advanced training, education, experience and certification who functions similarly to a pediatrician – doing assessments and physical exams, diagnosing health problems and creating a management plan which includes writing prescriptions and signing forms. The nursing model is holistic: caring for the whole person and family. Kids don't come in independently with an isolated acute illness- NPs work closely with families and communities to help children and their families achieve the patient's individualized health goals. It’s the best job out there. US News and World Report ranked nurse practitioners as the #1 job for job satisfaction, work-life balance and other measures. Education and training for NPs is rigorous, but it's worth it." For both women, an interesting turn of events and a touch of fate have clearly played a role in bringing them to this point in their careers. “Having Swati as my supervisor and mentor is a beautiful representation of how positive relationships continue to influence one’s life,” says Kathleen. “I still have the thank you note she wrote me years ago.”

We are teaming up with the Chicago Cubs for a day of celebrations in honor of #HispanicHeritageMonth. The day kicked off with a visit from Cubs pitcher Javier Assad at our Advocate Logan Square Clinic. Javier visited with patients and teammates, gifting custom Hispanic and Latino Heritage Night hats. But that’s just the beginning— stay tuned to see the festivities continue as we take the celebrations to Wrigley Field tonight! ??

Starting her career as a nurse, Victoria is a diabetes educator at Advocate Good Shepherd Hospital where she helps people manage diabetes and empowers patients with knowledge to live fully. "I am very passionate about helping people learn their potential and the tools for them to live their healthiest and happiest selves," she said. "I love instilling hope and support in my patients during a sometimes scary and overwhelming time in their lives." As an educator, she works one-on-one with patients to develop a personalized game-plan and goals to help them be successful with their treatment and lifestyle changes following a diabetes diagnosis.

Dr. Manan Naik and the vascular team at Advocate Good Samaritan Hospital completed a first of its kind procedure in Chicagoland to treat peripheral arterial disease below the knee. It’s a very complex disease to treat and can often lead to amputations and significant morbidity and mortality. This week, the team treated a patient below knee PAD with a bioabsorbable scaffold will be slowly absorbed, allowing to reduce the rate of progression of this disease.
