At our recent congressional briefing, leading experts discussed the state of the overdose crisis, the progress made and the urgent need to sustain bipartisan action. While nationwide overdose deaths have dropped by 21 percent, there is still work to be done to expand treatment access and overdose prevention efforts. Thank you to our panelists and partners—including the O'Neill Institute for National and Global Health Law and the Congressional Addiction, Treatment & Recovery Caucus—for helping drive this important conversation. Nigeria is on the road for self-sufficiency in its public health, says our own Vandana Shah, who joined the Nigerian Government to co-organize the 2025 National Strategic Health Summit on February 18 in Abuja. The event shaped strategies for resilience and local ownership that save lives at a time of dwindling donor support. On Africa Independent Television (AIT) - Abuja, she spoke of the importance of the partnership in creating a resilient Nigerian health system in areas such as epidemic preparedness and immunization but also on fostering tobacco control and healthy food policies. ? #NigeriaHealthSummit #HealthSecurity #GlobalHealth

Very grateful to Global Health Advocacy Incubator for highlighting my work using law and legal research to fight for healthier food environments in Colombia and Latin America. A long journey - almost 9 years - so that more people have access to real food. ? ?? ?? ?? ??
Fighting for the right to health in the courtroom—Diana Guarnizo-Peralta PhD is taking on the food industry in Colombia. As Director of Economic Justice at Dejusticia, she’s using legal advocacy to challenge corporate interference and push for taxes on ultra-processed foods, front-of-package warning labels and advertising restrictions. By exposing misleading industry claims and strengthening public health regulations, Diana is ensuring that policies to create healthier food environments are enacted and upheld. She hopes Latin America’s success in defending these measures will inspire global action—because protecting public health means standing up to powerful interests. ?? What policies do you think are most critical in the fight against ultra-processed foods? #WorldObesityDay #ChangingSystems #HealthierLives?

Recently, my team and I at the Legislative Initiative for Sustainable Development (LISDEL) were priviledged to support the Office of the Special Adviser to the President on Health to convene a Strategic Health Summit held at the Transcorp Hilton Abuja, tagged "One Vision, One Future: Uniting Stakeholders for a Healthier Nigeria." The Summit, funded by Global Health Advocacy Incubator provided opportunities to review progress made in the health sector based on recently released health reports such as the JEE and the NDHS. The summit was officially opened by George Akume, the SGF, who reaffirmed President Tinubu's commitment to healthcare and highlighted the administration’s bold interventions. Key stakeholders, including Dr Salma Ibrahim Anas and Vandana Shah, also shared their perspectives on building resilient healthcare systems, with a focus on domestic resource mobilization, epidemic preparedness, and strengthening health systems resilience. As a representative of LISDEL, I had the honor of participating in a panel discussion where I highlighted the need for technical support to the legislature in advancing critical development objectives. I also underscored LISDEL’s contributions to key achievements in Nigeria’s health sector, such as the progress made in health security. A pivotal topic discussed was the ongoing need to revitalize the BHCPF, vis-à-vis the 2024 Supreme Court ruling on LGA autonomy, which opens up significant opportunities for strengthening LGA’s role in financing and implementing healthcare reforms. The summit also served as an opportunity to recognize those who have played a significant role in driving Nigeria’s healthcare transformation. Some of the honorees included: ?? Exemplary Leadership in Health Transformation and National Development Award: Prof. Muhammad Ali Pate, the Coordinating Honorable Minister, Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare Nigeria Rt. Hon. Dr. Yusuf Tanko Sununu, the Honorable Minister of State Federal Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs, and Poverty Alleviation ?? Legislative Champion for Health Resilience Award: Senator Dr. Ipalibo Banigo (DSSRS) Senator Dr Ibrahim Oloriegbe Senator GODFREY CHUKWUKA UTAZI Honourable Musa Ali Kachako ?? Excellence in Public Health Transformation Awards: Prof. Akin Abayomi (Honourable Commissioner for Health in Lagos) Dr labaran yusuf Abubakar (Honourable Commissioner for Health in Kano) Oyebanji Filani (Honourable Commissioner for Health, Ekiti) Adaeze Oreh (Honorable Commissioner for Health, Rivers) The Strategic Health Summit was an incredible platform for fostering collaborative action, aligning stakeholders, and driving forward critical reforms that will shape a healthier, more resilient future for Nigeria. Together, we can build a more sustainable and equitable health system for all Nigerians! #StrategicHealthSummit2025 #HealthSecurity #EpidemicPreparedness #PrimaryHealthcare #UniversalHealthCoverage #LISDEL #PublicHealth #HealthReform
