I was able to snag this clip of the end of our NephCure Rare Kidneys on the Hill Day last week. I’ve never seen anything like it, and I’ve led or participated in roughly two dozen lobby days. Listen carefully. At this closing reception, our bill champions announced SEVEN new cosponsors in 24 hours as a result of our advocacy (for H.R. 6790 the New Era of Preventing End-Stage Kidney Disease Act). Some offices reached out immediately after meeting with our advocates to sign on. In the foreground you can see Kyle Matous, our lobbyist from Advocacy Associates, who has many years’ experience in high-level Hill positions. Through the academic internship program with The Fund for American Studies, I went through an interview process and was placed in an internship with Advocacy Associates. My work consisted of supporting and facilitating advocacy day services by directly assisting the logistics team with day-to-day tasks including scheduling, database management, and day-of event support. I organized and distributed briefing materials for advocates’ Congressional meetings and provided logistical event support. I also gained insight into Congressional agenda-setting, advocacy process, and the political landscape. During my time with Advocacy Associates, I also had the opportunity to take a tour of the Capitol, work on my professional development, support my coworkers onsite at NPR, and go out to my first Nationals baseball game with my staff. I want to thank all of Advocacy Associates staff, but especially my supervisors Paola Hernandez-Ortiz and Noah Becker for supporting and believing in my work as one of their interns. Working for Advocacy Associates was the best way to break down my barriers, become familiar with the culture of DC, and determine the next step for my career. Thank you Advocacy Associates for giving me the best intern experience.
