Jill Bachali, a nurse at AdventHealth Porter Hospice, discovered her true calling in hospice care after stepping away from nursing for 18 years to raise her family. At 46, as her oldest child prepared for college, Jill prayed for more than just a job—she asked for a purpose. Her prayer was answered during a visit to a friend receiving hospice care. Sitting at her friend’s bedside, Jill felt an overwhelming sense of peace and sacredness. “It was my first clue that I had a calling,” she said. Signs continued to point her toward hospice care—a book recommendation, a documentary, and a conversation with her hairdresser. Jill soon began volunteering at Porter Hospice, where she connected with the work. Her journey came full circle when she cared for her father in his final days. Equipped with the skills and compassion she had gained, Jill described the experience as both heartbreaking and holy. Now, eight years into her career at Porter Hospice, Jill reflects: “This work is sacred. God continues to bless me, and I am beyond grateful.”

Extending the healing ministry of Christ can sometimes bring our clinical teams outside of our borders through medical mission trips. For 55-year-old Mike Ross, living with back pain became a barrier to enjoying his favorite activities. "I found it increasingly discouraging to engage in the physical activities that I love and keep me centered, like snowboarding, hiking, and backpacking," Mike shared. "Even mild hikes would cause numbness and pain in my lower back, hips, and legs. By the end of a hike or a half day of fishing, I would lose coordination and balance, and the next day, I could barely walk." Mike realized it was time to seek help and felt very fortunate to have found his neurosurgeon, Dr. Sharad Rajpal, at AdventHealth Avista. "Dr. Rajpal recommended a fusion of L4-L5 and laminectomy to relieve my spine and other nerves from compression," said Mike. "I did a lot of research on surgeons, and Dr. Rajpal has an impeccable reputation." Today, Mike is back to doing the things that make him feel whole. We extend our heartfelt congratulations to Dr. Douglas Dennis from Colorado Joint Replacement for being awarded the prestigious Lawrence Dorr Humanitarian Award. Dr. Dennis is the founder of “Operation Walk Denver,” an initiative originally established by Dr. Larry Dorr in Los Angeles. Although Dr. Dorr has recently passed away, his legacy continues through this esteemed recognition. Dr. Dennis received the award on Saturday, November 9, from the American Association of Hip and Knee Society (AAHKS). The Humanitarian Award is designed to honor AAHKS members who have distinguished themselves by delivering humanitarian medical services and programs that significantly address musculoskeletal diseases and trauma, particularly concerning the hip and knee, both domestically and internationally. Dr. Dennis is exceptionally deserving of this honor, and we express our gratitude for the outstanding care he provides to his patients at AdventHealth Porter and around the globe.
