President Trump’s executive order presents a threat for our state. Stand with us against this attack on our communities. ? “This is a blatantly racist move aimed at further isolating and harming immigrant communities... For the past 25 years, California has led the way with one of the country’s most progressive language accessibility requirements — achievements made possible by the relentless advocacy and work of numerous organizations like AJSOCAL. However, this was not always the case. In 1986, California enacted Prop 63 which designated English as the official language of the state. This resulted in declines in educational outcomes, barriers to services, challenges to voting access, and more, which proved that English-only is harmful to the public. In 2000, Federal law established much-needed multi-language mandates and superseded Prop 63. CA community leaders responded, advocating and winning some of the strongest language access policies in the country and our work continues. Today our crisis response to wildfires, earthquakes, and pandemics necessitates reaching our multilingual AAPI population of which 30% are limited English speakers. The 2023 mass shooting in Monterey Park (a predominantly Chinese speaking community), highlighted critical shortcomings in the ability to communicate with LEP communities during crises. In light of that, we partnered with Assemblymember Fong to win more language access legislation. In our classrooms, we are finally catching up with multi-lingual teaching which was set back by decades of those English-only laws. From securing $5 million in 2022 to support the accreditation of Asian language bilingual teachers, to this year’s effort to provide financial aid for the development and purchase of bilingual teaching materials in partnership with Assemblymember Gonzalez, and local advocacy with historically underrepresented AAPI communities, we are continuously moving the needle toward a truly inclusive, multilingual CA. Without federal protections for language access, we stand to lose decades of progress and ability to legally challenge systemic discrimination against our communities." - Connie Chung Joe, CEO of AJSOCAL #AJSOCAL #LanguageAccess #AAPI #CommunityAdvocacy #MultilingualEducation #DiversityAndInclusion #ImmigrantRights #SocialJustice #LEP

As Black History Month comes to an end, our work on racial solidarity does not. AJSOCAL reaffirms its commitment to celebrating and uplifting the Black community, with whom the AAPI community has a strong history of solidarity. Did You Know? ?? Abolitionist Frederick Douglass advocated for Chinese immigration to the US in the 19th century ?? Activists Malcolm X and Yuri Kochiyama worked together in the civil rights movements of the ’60s AJSOCAL will continue to fight for all marginalized communities. We know that a rising tide lifts all boats. ?? ?? Watch: https://lnkd.in/gWBZxGvN #BlackHistoryMonth #BHM #RacialSolidarity

????Beware of potential ICE raids this week!???? ICE enforcement has been reported in various regions of LA and Orange Counties, including Macarthur Park, DTLA, Lincoln Heights, Boyle Heights, South Gate, Exposition Park, Pomona, Huntington Beach, Fullerton, and Garden Grove. The Trump administration's unconscionable plan to remove millions of immigrants living throughout our nation continues to employ aggressive ICE enforcement tactics targeting our homes, our workplaces, and public spaces. Get prepared NOW, stay vigilant, and fight for your rights! Be aware that immigration agents may drive vehicles or wear uniforms that say “POLICE” but are not actually local law enforcement. They may present a sham warrant that is not signed by a magistrate judge. They may also aggressively pressure you to open your door, follow them, or give them information. Do not be fearful or forget about your Constitutional rights. Stay diligent to protect yourselves and your loved ones! ??Find more resources for safety planning in English and multiple Asian languages: ajsocal.org/immigration/ If you see ICE in our communities, contact your local rapid response hotline: Los Angeles: 888-624-4752 Orange County: 714-881-1558 San Bernardino/Riverside: 909-361-4588 Santa Barbara/Ventura/San Luis Obispo: 805-870-8855 Central Valley: 559-206-0151 Kern County: 661-432-2230 ??Or, if you need assistance in Asian Languages: ajsocal.org/contact/ #AJSOCAL #AAPIresource #AAPIcommunity #Immigrants #ImmigrantRights #stayinformedandstaysafe #informedimmigrant #safeandsoundimmigration #safepathways #safeimmigrant

AJSOCAL strongly condemns the Trump Administration’s secretive and inhumane bridge deportations that are targeting migrants, including large numbers of South Asians and other nationals from Asian, Middle Eastern, and African countries, without transparency and accountability. The conditions in Panama and Costa Rica must meet international legal standards of health, safety, and human rights. We call on policymakers to ensure the following: 1??Immediate transparency regarding the identities, numbers, and conditions of those deported. 2??Full language access and legal representation for all individuals facing removal. 3??Compliance with international human rights laws, including access to proper shelter, food, and medical care. Connie Chung Joe, CEO of AJSOCAL, further stated, “Entire planes full of South Asians and other AAPI migrants are being forcibly sent to foreign countries with little information, inadequate resources, and no legal representation. We cannot allow history to repeat itself with internment-style deportations. These rapid removals, conducted under a veil of secrecy, violate fundamental human rights, exacerbate fear in immigrant communities, and echo dark chapters of American history when people of color were forcibly removed and detained without due process.” In the face of these ongoing attacks on immigrant communities, AJSOCAL remains dedicated in its commitment to protecting the rights of all people. We urge community members to stay informed about their legal rights which can be found at ajsocal.org/immigration. #AJSOCAL #Deportations #Panama #AAPIresource #AAPIcommunity #Immigrants #ImmigrantRights #stayinformedandstaysafe #informedimmigrant #safeandsoundimmigration #safepathways #safeimmigrant #redcards Los Angeles Times The New York Times CNN The Wall Street Journal Orange County Register
