When asked what percentage of patients use self-scheduling tools, nearly three-fourths of medical group owners surveyed by MGMA said less than 25% of their patients use digital tools to schedule appointments. In fact, only 11% of the survey respondents reported at least half of their patients use digital tools to schedule visits. "Many proponents of patient self-scheduling frequently point to a lower patient no-show rate as one of the key benefits of adding this functionality to practices," according to MGMA. "However, the relative lack of self-scheduling among these poll respondents leaves most practice leaders (43%) reporting they are unsure if patient self-scheduling reduces no-shows." But addressing no-shows is just one benefit of providing self-scheduling tools for patients. As MGMA outlines in its report, allowing patients to schedule their own appointments not only improves flexibility and convenience for patients, it can help increase operational efficiencies. ??SAVE THE DATE: On January 25, AdvancedMD partner TLD Systems will be sponsoring a free CME webinar to help medical groups safeguard their systems against ransomware attacks. ??According to a 2021 survey of IT and security professionals, more than 80% reported their organization had fallen victim to a ransomware attack. ??Among those impacted by ransomware, 60% paid a ransom fee to recover the data that had been stolen. ??More than 80% of the ransom fees totaled $100,000 or more. In the three years since the survey was conducted, ransomware attacks have only increased across business sectors. Healthcare organizations and medical groups are especially vulnerable because of the vast amount of patient data that resides within their systems. You can read more about the threat of ransomware and register for the free webinar on our blog at: https://lnkd.in/g4dJ_ZMb #HealthcareCybersecurity #Ransomware #PrivatePractice

The American Heart Association (AHA) recently released a scientific statement addressing the role of primary care in cardiovascular health. "Primary care professionals have the potential to greatly improve the identification and treatment of cardiovascular risk factors and health behaviors in their patients," according to the statement covered by Medical Economics reporter Austin Littrell. The AHA estimates that one in four deaths in the U.S. caused by cardiovascular disease could be prevented with the right lifestyle changes and medical treatments. "The AHA’s recommendations for improving and maintaining optimal cardiovascular health come in the form of the AHA's Life’s Essential 8 guidelines, a list of four health behaviors—diet, physical activity, nicotine exposure and sleep—and four health factors—body mass index (BMI), blood lipids, blood glucose and blood pressure," writes Littrell. Social determinants of health (SDOH) play an integral role in population health outcomes, as this recent report from Healthcare IT Today makes clear. The publication asked a number of healthcare leaders how social determinants of health (SDOH) impact population health outcomes and what initiatives they have implemented to address healthcare disparities. According to Samantha Bockoven Tamminga, health clinics coordinator at The Vineyard Free Health Clinics, "At our free health clinic, each patient completes a social needs screening survey on arrival to the clinic. This allows us to meet the patient’s needs in real-time, whether it is giving them hygiene items, referring them to our food pantry, providing them with free medication, or connecting them with a case worker." The Vineyard Free Health Clinics in Columbus, Ohio has been a longstanding AdvancedMD customer and we couldn't agree more with Samantha's approach to caring for the most vulnerable within the Columbus community. As a healthcare provider, do you ever wonder how your sleep schedule and amount of overtime hours may be impacting your work? Researchers from University of Pennsylvania Perelman School of Psychiatry teamed up with researchers at Japan's Juntendo University Graduate School of Medicine to determine if sleep durations influence a physician's alertness and psychological health. "The study utilized standardized surveys to assess sleep duration in addition to symptoms of burnout and depression," writes Medical Economics editor Austin Littrell. "A brief Psychomotor Vigilance Test (PVT-B) was used to assess the physician’s alertness." After surveying more than 1,200 physicians in Japan and analyzing the PVT results, the study findings revealed that working 10 additional hours per week led to increased burnout severity. "Attentional lapses and generally poor objective alertness on the PVT were associated with increased rates of depression and intense feelings of burnout, suggesting that PVT performance could be a useful indicator of psychological health, although further research is required," according to Littrell.
