Our RETROFIT55 partners, Advanced Wing Systems & Atlantec Enterprise Solutions, visited SMM Hamburg last week. A scale model of the Flexible Wing Sail?system was on display and fascinated visitors at the exhibition, while visitors were able to get a sneak preview of the Decision Support System (DSS), which is one of the major outputs of this project. Last week, SMM Hamburg was a great success. We had the opportunity to interact with many industry stakeholders, with very positive feedback. This week we are at the Friendship Systems CAESES users conference in Potsdam, Germany, with the same type of feedback. We have quite a lot to follow up and the outlook is good.

Wind propulsion is a difficult proposition for geared ships. There are a large number of cargo vessels which have 3 or 4 deck cranes. These cranes are a significant impediment to fitting wind propulsion. Firstly, the competition for deck space limits the placement options for wind propulsion devices. Secondly, the windage of the cranes interferes with wind flow and they, on their own, represent significant aerodynamic drag. Advanced Wing Systems has devised a solution to replace the crane with a wing sail system that also acts as a crane. Both knuckle-boom and derrick options are possible, with high load carrying capacity. If this is a solution that would be of interest to you please get in touch.
