Thank you Joel Howarth for a great year. We really enjoyed having you work with us at Advanced Process Technologies Inc. Best of luck to you as you continue your education!
As my final days as a Controls Engineering intern at Advanced Process Technologies Inc. draw to a close, I want to take a moment to reflect on my experiences and the valuable lessons I've learned. This internship provided me with a comprehensive view of the entire process involved in designing, programming, and installing a cutting-edge automated food processing system. I’m thankful for the opportunity my team gave me to be involved in every phase, which allowed me to gain a thorough and broad understanding of the entire process from start to finish. My journey began with designing HMI screens in FactoryTalk Studio, where I created the graphics and control interfaces used daily by operators. I then moved on to programming the code behind these screens using Studio 5000 ladder logic, bringing the automation controls to life. Testing the equipment and instruments was my favorite part of the internship. Working hands-on in the shop and witnessing the design and programming come to fruition was an incredible learning experience. I also had the chance to spend a week onsite in Milbank, South Dakota, at Valley Queen Cheese, where we worked on adding four new receiving bays to increase the intake of raw milk. My focus was primarily on I/O checking the newly installed equipment to ensure that each instrument's signal was properly received by the PLC. This crucial step ensures that every component functions correctly within the automation system before running actual product through it. The trip was successful, with minimal issues from the new equipment, and provided valuable insights into setting up and troubleshooting new systems. Finally, I want to express my gratitude to my team lead, Tanner Eull, for his guidance and mentorship throughout the internship. I also appreciate Mark Danielson, Michael Ryan and James Hahn for the opportunity to shadow them at Valley Queen. I am excited to apply everything I’ve learned in my future endeavors. Thank you all!
