San Jose to Combine Data Centers, Housing: A novel development in San Jose, Calif. will feature 3 large data centers and 4,000 units of residential housing, with a district energy system that will provide heat and hot water for residents. The project will be jointly developed by utility Pacific Gas and Electric Company and real estate developer Westbank Corp. PG&E will provide 200 megawatts of clean energy to support the data centers, which will use excess heat from servers in the district energy system. The developers say the project will "transform downtown?San Jose?by responding to demand for both artificial intelligence (AI)-driven data centers and housing." It's a different take from planning in some data center hubs, where officials seeking to keep data centers away from housing. By using servers to heat homes, the developers hope to pioneer an approach that integrates technology and housing. "We are a laboratory for the future — and in our city, that future is net zero," said San Jose Mayor Matt Mahan. "This project proposed by Westbank and PG&E has the potential to change the way that our cities are built, developed and powered for the better, and we're going to do everything we can at City Hall to support its success." The insides of a silicon photonics module as shown by Marvell Technology. Why silicon photonics? If a discrete module has eight 200G channels in one chip, it requires four EML lasers to run at 1.6T. With silicon photonics, everything is?integrated and four channels can share one laser, which means the module only needs two less-expensive CW lasers to run.
