Here’s what I’d tell myself if I started a shop today. More unattended hours > cycle time improvements. almost always So prioritize accordingly. If you can run 2,3,4 machines with one person. Do it. Then keep pushing for more. Vertical mills with one vise are usually the most inefficient machines in a shop. Can’t afford a 5-axis? Put an indexer with a trunnion on your vertical. Don’t have “true 5-axis work”? Get one anyway. Unnecessary setups slow you down and introduce risk 3+2 = 1 & done Mixed Mindset > Fixed Mindset Utilize the full working envelope of each machine and run multiple parts/operations even if they seem “disconnected”. Don’t limit a plate or a tombstone to one part or one operation. If you have more space available - use it. Once you’ve done that - automate the loading of the machine tool. But only if you have a stabalized your process. So you better have a lights out checklist that includes chip control, coolant management, tool management, and provisions for all the things that can ruin your “free time”. Do finicky work during the day when your best people are focused on it. Run volume at night when you’re not paying for it. Think ahead of the machine - match parts, workholding, and programs to pallets and run through the night or the weekend. Work like this, and you’ve earned the right to be called a “top shop” and love the journey knowing you’ll never arrive. ——— All these thoughts (with no AI writing assistance to make it pretty) just to say what we always say….
