GIVING THANKS: DAY 3 of 5 In the United States, this is the week we celebrate the Thanksgiving holiday. To express our gratitude, we’re highlighting five things we’re thankful for – one for each weekday. Recognizing the many pressures that today’s growers face, we’re expressing our gratitude for the precision agriculture tools that are helping them improve crop yields and conserve crop inputs. It’s been estimated that a 1,000 acre cash crop farm can increase its annual revenue by $20,000 to $70,000 by implementing precision agriculture technologies. This aligns with studies that show precision can often help farmers increase overall crop production by about 4%. What’s more, precision ag. can help farmers reduce water usage by 4-25% and herbicide use by about 6%.

GIVING THANKS: DAY 2 of 5 In the United States, this is the week we celebrate the Thanksgiving holiday. To express our gratitude, we’re highlighting five things we’re thankful for – one for each weekday. Recognizing the economic impact of natural disasters, we’re giving thanks for the early warning systems that keep associated losses from being much greater. According to the WMO, the damage caused by a disaster can be reduced by 30% with just 24 hours of early warning. Globally, that could translate to avoiding losses of (US) $3-16 billion each year.

GIVING THANKS: DAY 1 of 5 In the United States, this is the week we celebrate the Thanksgiving holiday. To express our gratitude, we’re highlighting five things we’re thankful for – one for each weekday. Recognizing the human toll of natural disasters, we are starting by expressing our gratitude for the tens of thousands of lives saved each year through the use of early warning systems. Reported natural disasters killed an average of 50,000 people annually throughout the 1970s. But, the average death toll dropped to about 20,000 by the 2010s and into the 2020s. That’s a 40% reduction in average mortality! Other studies have shown that early warnings can reduce fatalities by as much as 97%!

We often talk about the growing frequency and intensity of environmental hazards. In the abstract, those words can start to feel empty. That’s why it’s important to periodically remind ourselves of the real impact that these events have on lives and livelihoods. With that in mind, here’s a look back at some of the top events of 2024.

Anyone interested in our wildfire predicament and modern fire management should watch this US documentary. It’s about 50min long, but well worth it. No matter what country, fire takes on the context we allow it to have. This has been true since the first hominid used fire to shape their surroundings. It’s a defining feature of being a human (the fire species). Solely engaging in fire exclusion and perpetuating a culture of manic suppression causes this problem, and doesn’t solve it. We need courage and leadership from better informed elected representatives down through all fire management organisations and their leadership to create the legal, social and political environment to genuinely change fires’ context. We also need to empower indigenous fire practitioners and unlock their wisdom. I feel grateful to be part of a business shaping and building global tools and solutions to enable this shift to unlock safely applied, good fire at scale, and not just focus on response. https://lnkd.in/gi3a84Yf
