Today, on International Women’s Day, we’re spotlighting influential women who have left a lasting legacy in the engineering world. ?? Mae Jemison is a former NASA astronaut and the first African American woman to travel in space, Mae Jemison is also a physician and engineer. She has been an advocate for science education and technology, promoting STEM fields among underrepresented groups. Rosalind Franklin was a pioneering chemist and crystallographer whose work on X-ray crystallography was key to discovering the structure of DNA. Born in London in 1920, she earned a Ph.D. in physical chemistry from the University of Cambridge in 1945. Despite challenges as a woman in a male-dominated field, her research laid the foundation for modern molecular biology and genetics, making her one of the most important scientists of the 20th century. Elsie Eaves was a pioneering structural engineer and the first woman elected to the American Society of Civil Engineers. She contributed to major projects like the Hoover Dam, advancing modern dam design and safety. Eaves also advocated for women in STEM, serving as president of the Society of Women Engineers. Chein-Shuing was a experimental physicist, she made significant contributions to the field of nuclear physics, including her work on the Manhattan Project. She is best known for the "Wu Experiment," which helped prove the theory of parity violation in weak nuclear interactions. Let’s honour these ground-breaking women whose accomplishments continue to inspire us to challenge limits and drive diversity and inclusion in engineering. Happy International Women's Day! ?????? #AEUK25 #ukmfg #internationalwomensday #iwd

Another year, another brilliant day at the Make UK National Manufacturing Conference with the Advanced Engineering UK team. ?? Dan Smith Sunday Wilson Simon Farnfield ?? Loved meeting so many new faces and catching up on what’s happening across the industry. Here are my 3 key takeaways: 1. Back in 2024, we heard the UK goverment promises – the refreshed UK Industrial Strategy and big commitments to back #manufacturing. But will 2025 finally be the year we see real, tangible actions? The sector’s been more than patient. 2. #SMEs are the future of this industry. But their future? Still feeling pretty uncertain. Early involvement in strategy and #procurement pipelines is key. 3. #Skills, #skills, #skills… and did we mention #skills? Every session, every conversation – from technical to #leadership. Looking forward to see what the Industrial Skills Commission reveals in April. Big thanks to Make UK for delivering another incredible day for UK manufacturing. And don’t forget your next big manufacturing date – October 29 & 30 2025 at The NEC, Birmingham Come see this year’s advancements on these topics and more at Advanced Engineering UK
