On Wednesday, October 9, three Stony Brook University students had the opportunity to see the ?rsted South Fork Wind Farm off the coast of Long Island. Shiue Deng, Abdul Muneeb, and Yuxuan Wu, graduate students of Fang Luo, PhD, sailed 35 miles for a tour of the offshore wind farm. The tour, provided by ?rsted, was especially exciting for our students, as their studies are directly related to offshore wind power systems, cables, and transmission equipment. Thank you ?rsted for allowing our students to be hands-on in this exciting opportunity. #AERTC #OffshoreWindFarm #OffshoreWind #SouthForkWind #?rsted

The AERTC held its first cohort session of the Offshore Wind Training Institute in the new HVDC training lab last week. Sponsored by the Offshore Wind Training Institute and jointly led by Dr. Fang Luo, Director of the Spellman High Voltage Power Electronics Lab, and Derek O'Connor, Workforce Development Manager at Stony Brook University Economic Development , the cohort brought together 20 students from Suffolk County Community College interested in the growing offshore wind field. The lab is fully equipped with three state-of-the-art power electronics and electrical power training stations that provide hands-on experiments and?education. The next cohort session will be held this Friday, September 20, in the AERTC building. #StonyBrookAERTC #OffshoreWindTraining #OffshoreWind #HVDC #HVDCTraining

Last week, AERTC hosted a tour for John O'Leary, Deputy Secretary for Energy in the Office of the Governor of New York. Mr. O'Leary was given an overview of both AERTC by Center Director James Acquaviva and Chairman of the Board Robert B. Catell. After introductions were made, an overview of Stony Brook University Economic Development was presented by Kevin Gardner, Vice President for Research, David Hamilton, Director of Ecosystems Growth and Impact, and Nina Maung, PhD, Senior Associate Vice President for Research Development and Partnerships. Mr. O'Leary was then given a guided tour through the many innovative laboratories at the center by their researchers, including the Spellman High Voltage Power Electronics Lab by Fang Luo, PhD, the Center for Mesoscale Transport Properties by Shan Yan, PhD, and the Advanced Combustion and Alternative Fuels Lab by Dimitris Assanis, PhD. It was an honor to host a tour for Mr. O'Leary and discuss the ground-breaking technology being developed by our researchers and we hope to have him visit again. #StonyBrookAERTC #AERTC #Research #PowerElectronics #BatteryStorage #CombustionEngineering

Last week, Stony Brook Economic Development's Associate Director of Technology and Engineering Slowa Solovyov, PhD, gave a tour to the Activate NY Fellows. The tour took the group through the Center for Integrated Electric Energy Systems (CIEES) and Institute of Gas Innovation and Technology (I-GIT) labs, and had the opportunity to speak with Ray Sambrotto, Founder and CEO of Allied Microbiota and Brian Gilman, Founder and CEO of Evolve Hydrogen Inc. We look forward to potential collaborations in the future.
Yesterday, August 15, Stony Brook Economic Development had the privilege to host Activate NY's Fellows for a tour of Stony Brook University's Research and Development Park. The Fellows were given an overview of Economic Development's centers and areas, including Center of Excellence in Wireless and Information Technology (CEWIT) At Stony Brook University, Advanced Energy Research and Technology Center (AERTC), Strategic Partnership for Industrial Resurgence (SPIR) at Stony Brook University, LIMEP - Long Island Manufacturing Extension Partnership, Center for Integrated Electric Energy Systems (CIEES), Stony Brook Small Business Development Center, Long Island High Technology Incubator (LIHTI), and Stony Brook Intellectual Property Partners. After the team presented an overview of each center and their ongoing projects, the Fellows were given a tour of the CEWIT and AERTC facilities. Economic Development looks forward to future collaborations with Activate NY's Fellows and the potential to bring their ideas to the marketplace.
