Wonderful for D. Evan van Hook and I to join Advanced Energy Group for #PREnergyWeek25 We had the privilege of visiting Puerto Rico’s largest solar generating plant: Infinigen Renewables’ Oreana Park - a 200 acre 57 MW array. The system has been generating non-commodity based power for nine years and is on track to operate thru 2044! New generation is vital. While generation runs so closely with system load, keeping reserve would increase manual load shed events (rolling black outs) and hurt customers - The Island’s grid is operated with zero margin. On average, manual load shed events occur 1 in 10 days annually and LUMA predicts these events will *double* this summer compared to previous seasons. Batteries can help! Among other programs, LUMA Energy has recently launched ASAP, the Accelerated Storage Addition Program. Aptly named, ASAP creates recognition and urgency that adding 110 MW of Batteries would decrease manual load shed events by 1/3 in addition to reducing high cost operating hours of The Island’s peaker plants. Viridi is grateful to join with this motivated group of committed professionals (like Robert F. Parker) to learn about PR’s unique characteristics and challanges from those who know it best, and to harness our collective focus in catalyzing positive impact for Puerto Rico’s energy future.

Esta semana, tuve el privilegio de participar en la Advanced Energy Group Puerto Rico Energy Week, donde líderes de la industria, legisladores y partes interesadas se reunieron para discutir el futuro de la energía en la isla. Desde microgrids??? y plantas de energía virtual???? hasta el Plan de Recursos Integrados (IRP)????, las conversaciones fueron profundas y llenas de visión de futuro. ??? Fue inspirador escuchar perspectivas diversas sobre cómo podemos abordar los desafíos energéticos de Puerto Rico mientras adoptamos la innovación y la sostenibilidad. Las discusiones destacaron la importancia de la colaboración ??, la tecnología ??? y la planificación estratégica para construir un sistema energético más resiliente y eficiente para el futuro. ???? Greatful to have been a part of this year’s PR Energy Week alongside the Resource Innovations team hosted by Advanced Energy Group with H.G. Chissell and the entire team. Always a great time to reconnect with colleagues in the energy field in Puerto Rico ???? and participating in amazing workshops with crucial focus points that will ensure the Island’s transformation.

Last week we had the opportunity kick-off of this year’s edition of the Advanced Energy Group Puerto Rico Energy Week 2025 at the University of Puerto Rico-Mayaguez. It was an event that gathered diverse leaders from industry, government, academia, and communities in relevant conversations regarding the energy matters that Puerto Rico faces today with an outlook for the future. It certainly feels very special to have opened the door to host the activities in Mayagüez, get more students involved and give visibility to our initiatives at UPRM as part of the achievements of Proyecto Luz Verde UPRM. I would like to thank all of those involved in the success of the events in our campus, with participation ranging from leaders aand students of the IEEE Power and Energy Society UPRM Student Branch Chapter, to the Dean of Engineering Cristina Pomales-Garcia and Chancellor Agustín Rullán. Big shoutout to Kenneth Ramírez, Emil Santana Figueroa, RICARDO A SOTO-FELICIANO, Camila Sofia Morales-Soto and many other students for their efforts and help with coordination!
