Good read.
I will not stop posting about the damage we are doing to our children in sports until governing bodies, leagues, and state organizations address this head-on. Thousands of children in every youth sport sit on the bench and get little to no playing time. Coaches and many parents are involved in sports for the winning. They never seem to step back and think about WHY a child should play sports. The dropout rate for soccer at 13 years of age is staggering. We have all known about this for years but do nothing about it. When and how will this stop? The actions of adults when the focus is on winning can be a devastating blow that makes kids feel worthless and useless when they don't win. You cannot develop children if your focus is on winning alone. This is why so many kids ride the bench and are being damaged. It is shameful! Coaches have a specific goal: to improve their players' skills while fostering a love of the game and commitment to the team. We inspire the athletes and give them the belief that they have an opportunity to perform on game day. Coaches are avoiding this, and worse still, they are not being held accountable by club, group, or school leadership. Developing a player takes time and practice. With this generation of adults, we have come to expect everything quickly, and this has festered into our culture. Perseverance and working toward a goal can be challenging to instill in youth today. With athletics, there's no way around it. To learn a sport, a child must experience hours of practice and coaching to improve. The coaching style of all coaches must be monitored, held accountable, inspiring, and willing to reflect and learn. A GREAT MENTOR HELPS YOU TO ACHIEVE WHAT SEEMS IMPOSSIBLE!
