Though a little late, I want to discuss the insightful internship I did over the summer at Advance OC! After declaring my Health Informatics minor last year, my passion and curiosity in this field have only increased more and more. This was especially emphasized throughout my entire duration of the summer at this organization. Throughout the past few months, our wonderful team collaborated on numerous projects that we acknowledged during the first-ever UCI PHIT Internship Poster Presentation event. ?? Gathered information for the development of a youth vulnerability index (YVI) by collecting census data from Orange County, California, and nationwide, to emphasize the importance and reality of problems we need to address for local youthful communities. ? Found research on different indicators and methodologies from various public health-funded plans in Southern California to understand how they focus on their community's needs. ?? Updated several indicators for each city in Orange County by utilizing the most recent census data to display on the Advance OC website; also gathered new and updated reports that discuss many different public health service areas to display on the Advance OC website. ??? ?I also want to acknowledge my peers and fellow interns for their impressive skills in designing and rebranding the Advance OC website, and for creating a new data exchange hub to promote accessible data to the public. My experience not only helped me improve in skills such as data analysis, data collection, data cleaning, etc... but I also gained a valuable lesson that data can mask or highlight environmental and health inequities in our very own neighborhoods, and how the importance of recognizing biases during the data collection process can impact different outcomes. My experience wouldn't be the same without our wonderful team, so a huge thank you to interns Shayla Ho, Jocelyn Phan, Cassidy Bayron, Shannon Thompson, Jaini Thakkar, and Bryan for being the absolute best in every aspect. A huge shoutout to Mary Zhuang (Site Supervisor and Research Associate) for your leadership and constant help through the course of the summer, and of course, a special thanks to the rest of the Advance OC team. I would also like to thank Jennifer Hajcak (PHIT Field Coordinator) and the rest of the PHIT team for this opportunity and their consistent outstanding support.
