Our state legislature came back into session this week to fast-track HB 10 and expand it beyond its original intent. HB 10 threatens our public schools and immigrant families. In the newly released version, our elected officials added some critical budget allocations but funneled millions of dollars from public schools to private school vouchers.?This egregious bill also targets immigrant families and communities by forcing local law enforcement to enforce federal immigration policies. In NC, we are facing the most extreme and far right slate of GOP candidates across numerous races on the ballot. So, it was my honor as the Consulting Program Attorney for my client Advance Carolina to stand with other legal experts, advocates, and pro-democracy groups to discuss Judge Jefferson Griffin’s jurisprudence and one of his most extreme legal memos (later withdrawn) that could impact our reproductive freedoms. Jovita Lee, Ed.D, MPA, PgD wasn’t old enough to vote in 2008, when Barack Obama was at the top of the Democratic Party ticket. But she remembers that contest very clearly: It was the last one that her grandmother, who had an eighth-grade education and hailed from a family of sharecroppers, participated in. “She went through segregation and the Civil Rights Movement and had the chance to cast her final ballot for a Black man — that’s an incredible journey,” Lee, the policy director of Advance Carolina, a Black-led grassroots organization, told Capital B. “Then to see her watching the results come in. I am immensely grateful for the opportunity to continue my work with the Advance Carolina as the Cumberland County Lead. Our efforts go beyond just the election season; it’s a year-round commitment to our community. As a young voter, it’s inspiring to give back by informing my community about their voting rights, voter laws, and ensuring they are registered and getting to the polls. She always emphasizes that there is a threat to our democracy, and we are dedicated to doing everything in our power to safeguard it. I am incredibly grateful to have the opportunity to serve as the Cumberland County lead for Advance Carolina. Our team worked tirelessly during the primary election, culminating in a successful "Party at the Polls" event aimed at community outreach. We knocked on approximately 2,660 doors throughout this election cycle, engaging with voters and encouraging them to vote.
