Thousands of Arizonans participate each year in ADOT's Adopt a Highway volunteer program. Their stories and their impact are truly inspiring, from a small army that has a one-day litter along all 45 miles of State Route 286 in southern Arizona to the hundreds of groups that adopt highway segments as memorials to loved ones. Through his work to ensure safe travel by commercial vehicles, Officer Mike Dees with our Enforcement and Compliance Division (ECD) embodies ADOT's commitment to safely connecting people while empowering the state's economy. That's why the Arizona Trucking Association recently honored Officer Dees as its 2024 ADOT ECD Officer of the Year. Officer Dees, at right in the picture above with Doug Dwiggins, Chairman of the Arizona Trucking Association, has been with ECD since 2000. He has a well-earned reputation for relentless dedication to commercial vehicle safety and protecting Arizona's transportation infrastructure. He and other ECD officers promote safe commercial travel at the state’s ports of entry and mobile inspection stations. ECD also conducts vehicle identification inspections and investigations related to vehicle dealers, title fraud and driver license and state identification fraud. Working out of the Interstate 10 San Simon port of entry near the New Mexico line, Officer Dees is assigned to the Southern Region of the Arizona Commercial Vehicle Safety Partnership, which is made up of ECD officers and State Troopers with the Arizona Department of Public Safety. During the fiscal year, ending June 30, he conducted 759 Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance inspections and 579 commercial vehicle traffic stops. But promoting safe commercial travel is about more than enforcement, and the honor recognized the way Officer Dees educates drivers about safety while holding them accountable for state and federal laws and regulations. It also noted his consistently impartial and friendly demeanor no matter the circumstance, winning him regular compliments from motorists, peers and supervisors. We couldn't be prouder to see Officer Dees' good work recognized by the Arizona Trucking Association.

An event scheduled for Tuesday, Oct. 22, is designed to help small businesses and firms qualifying for ADOT’s Disadvantaged Business Enterprise (DBE) Program compete for contracts in the transportation industry. With a theme of “Bridging Inclusive Growth,” the ADOT DBE & Small Business Conference will be held at the Delta Hotel in Mesa. It will feature extensive opportunities for networking, discussions with prime contractors, one-on-one appointments with buying agencies and prime contractors, educational breakout sessions, opportunities to learn about ADOT programs designed to help build businesses and much more. Join us for an opportunity to hear from prominent leaders in the transportation sector including ADOT’s Deputy Director Teresa Welborn, who will share their expertise and insights on current trends and future developments in the industry. The ADOT Motor Vehicle Division attended a Sensory Awareness Family Event (S.A.F.E) hosted by Trader Joe's with Gilbert, Arizona police and fire departments?this week. They were able to provide education on the Blue Envelope Program and hand out Blue Envelopes to those who wanted them. Great work, ADOT MVD!

Thanks to everyone who turned out Saturday for our National Cleanup Day event along Loop 202 in Tempe! This was a great chance for community members and ADOT staff to promote the Adopt a Highway program and how cleaner roadsides help keep Arizona grand. Whether you're heading to the Sphere, catching a concert or trying your luck at the tables, Las Vegas is a draw for many Arizonans. But if your trip back falls on a busy travel weekend, your luck can run out approaching Kingman on southbound US 93. That's why we're so excited about a project underway to create a free-flowing interchange between US 93 and Interstate 40. This improvement will free drivers passing through Kingman from needing to negotiate Beale Street's traffic lights to reach I-40. And it will improve traffic flow for area residents as well.
