2024 will be a historic year, but forget the election and let’s talk about the Cicada, which has more backbone than most elected officials.
For the first time in over 2 centuries 17 states will be invaded by a dual emergence of a 13 year and 17 year cicatta brood.
The fact that these broods emerge incrementally by different prime numbers, thereby avoiding frequent dual emergences, (except 13 x 17 = 221) hence the over-2-centuries bit, is a fascinating nugget in and of itself. Learning a little bit about these big bugs is more worthwhile of an endeavor than diving into some of the the juicier conspiracy theories you will undoubtedly be subjected to this year.
Speaking of juicy, these things aren’t just pretty, they’re pretty delicious too. Closely related to crayfish, Cicadas have the savory signiatures of seafood with a slight earthy nitrogen-nuttiness from their subterranean marinade. (Try the 13 year, but the 17 year is well worth extra cash and fancy bottle)
“It is not common to have a dual emergence between Broods XIII and XIX. They occur once every 221 years and the last time these two broods emerged together was in 1803. Thomas Jefferson was President of the United States, and Lewis and Clark started their exploration of s the Louisiana Purchase.” -https://lnkd.in/ev4dxKdi.
What does the Cicada have to do Adirondack Environmental Services, Inc? - the largest and most exceptional full-service environmental laboratory in the Northeast!?
Absolutely nothing. But bugs are cool.
Have a great 2024.
