What do companies really mean when they say their product "kills 99.9% of germs?" Log reduction claims provide useful data, but they are often based on controlled lab tests with ideal conditions—clean, non-porous surfaces and carefully selected pathogens. Some companies may highlight results from just one test strain rather than a range of microbes, even though efficacy can vary widely between different bacteria, viruses, and fungi. Exposure time is another critical factor. A product may achieve a high log reduction in just a few minutes for one pathogen, but others could take much longer. If only the fastest result is reported, it may not reflect the time actually needed to inactivate a broader range of harmful microbes—especially in real-world settings where time is limited. Understanding these conditions is key to evaluating whether a product truly meets your needs. Watch our latest video to learn what to look for when assessing disinfection claims.

We use UV light for disinfection, but did you know it could also be used to solve crimes? In this post, we’re highlighting some fascinating uses of UV light in forensic science—UV-A can reveal hidden fingerprints and uncover document forgeries, UV-B can highlight chemical residues and burn patterns, and UV-C can be used to sterilize evidence and tools to prevent contamination. Together, these applications help investigators uncover critical evidence and solve cases.
