Every year, World Blood Donor Day reminds us that a single act—donating blood—can save lives. In the same way, World Adherence Day on March 27 shines a light on a critical issue: medication adherence. When patients take their medications as prescribed, health outcomes improve, hospitalizations decrease, and lives are saved. This year, THE ADHERENCE PROJECT will assess real-time global adherence using the validated MMAS, giving us a clearer picture of medication-taking behaviors worldwide. For 24 hours, we will see the world in a way never seen before. Just as every drop of donated blood matters, every adherence assessment contributes to a healthier future. The data we collect isn’t just numbers—it’s insight that drives change. It helps healthcare providers support patients better, informs policy decisions, and provides opportunities for students in research. My network is limited. But the collaborations forged with universities and hospitals have leveled up. We will have data from Jamaica, Columbia, Ecuador, Greece, India, Australia and where else??? This year will set a bar. Next year we raise it. Let’s take action. Let’s assess, measure, and make adherence a global priority. Give a minute. It could save a life. adherence. ???Today is World Glaucoma Day. The focus is on action, not just awareness Raising awareness about glaucoma is important, but awareness alone isn’t enough. We need action. One critical area that demands attention is medication adherence, as non-adherence remains a significant barrier to preventing glaucoma-related vision loss. So my action is to highlight a study, "The Most Common Barriers to Glaucoma Medication Adherence" by lead co-author Paula Anne Newman-Casey and her team. Interventions MUST be tailored to each patient's unique set of barriers. The study found that common obstacles include: ?? Forgetting doses (even among those with good intentions) ?? Difficulty with eye drop administration ?? Cost and access to medication ?? Misunderstanding the severity of glaucoma Interventions are tailored to the individual. Solutions must be personalized, patient-centered, and data-driven—whether through reminder systems, patient education, or improved access to care. Yes, we do recognize #WorldGlaucomaDay and celebrate the milestones we have achieved in treatment options, so let’s push for practical interventions that actually improve adherence and prevent avoidable blindness. Awareness is the first step, but action is what truly makes a difference. March 27 marks #worldadherenceday by the World Heart Federation. As a strong supporter in this mission to better our healthcare system, ATLAS adherence. Platform will host a 24 hour #MMAS global assessment. Committments are pouring in all over the world from universities and hospitals that want to participate in this phenomenon event. Students, clinicans and health care workers will go out into their local communities and ask the very relevant questions. All this data will upload real time into a global map, showcasing what adherence really looks like. Is it 50% non adherent like the World Health Organization makes claim? Some studies show worse and some show better. So half would be safe to say. But the MMAS goes deeper into the insights of intentional and unintentional non adherence. I invite and challenge the world to this. One person improvement would be a success story for me. Lets see how many ones we can actually get. DM for details. Hesistany, Adherence, and Compliance to long term medications in context of Global Health Security. Many years ago, I lost someone to Sepsis from Advanced HIV disease. He had started a life with his first car and a beautiful family. To my surprise, all the family members knew he was living positively but had defaulted on life-saving medicines ?? Also, many years ago, I went on field work with a personal driver, who later fell severely ill and was admitted. I later discovered that he was battling a chronic condition and had also defaulted on his medications. These stories are not only common in clinical rooms but also can be eavedropped during burial ceremonies. The other day, I shared how my client could not accept a vaccine because of not being able to access the findings of many other research studies conducted. Today, I would like to put a question: How do we get our clients to understand the value of being consistent with their prescribed Regimens, especially for HIV/AIDS and other comorbid conditions such as Diabetes and hypertension? Do we need to translate guidelines into local languages? Should we have our usual clients offer their feedback on how this information can be shared? How best can this be done? In one of the facility visits, I took this wonderful client area during on-site supervision to establish evidence based practices in provisions of HIV/AIDS care. The message in here directly informs the clients that when you take your medicines, the germs are weakened, and your body defense starts to fight for and protect you. In a recent Podcast, Seye Abimbola argues that community driven research is not the same as community involvement in research. Communities must own the interventions rather than being invited to just participate. Could this approach be a game changer in designing programs that address the growing challenges of failed compliance and lost to follow-up in chronic care? What do you think?

15 Days to World Adherence Day! The countdown is on! In just 15 days—on March 27, World Adherence Day—we will put global medication adherence to the test. I’m challenging everyone concerned about medication adherence to take part in The Adherence Project. On this day, THE ATLAS platform will assess and measure real-time global adherence using the validated MMAS adherence tools. Many of you have already tested it out. I will reset the counter on 12:00:01 GMT. For years, the World Health Organization has reported that nearly 50% of people do not take their medications as prescribed. But is this truly accurate? Let’s find out. How many assessments can we get? Even one is a win. Every inhabited continent is on board. This is a global call to action—let’s gather the data, spark conversations, and drive change. It takes more than just myself to promote this. I am grateful to the many Universities and hospitals that have reached out to me and are stepping up and inviting their students, residents and all health care workers to go out and interview people in their own communities. Just a few minutes of their time can provide us with data so valuable, we can make an actual change. The theme here is action over acknowledgement. My dear friend and collaborator, Philip Morisky, MBA, Ξ is doing great work in medication adherence. On March 27, for 24 continuous hours, he will capture real-time global medication adherence data, the first effort of its kind in history. This isn’t just another study. It’s a live look at how people around the world take their medications across different countries, cultures, and healthcare systems. The data, collected on World #Adherence Day, will be immediate, powerful, and actionable, paving the way for new research, better interventions, and real solutions. The best part? Anyone can be involved. Whether you’re in healthcare, research, public health, or simply passionate about making a difference, Philip’s work is worth paying attention to. Impactful research opportunities will emerge from this effort! If you’re interested, follow Philip Morisky or message me. I’d be happy to connect you!
