World Suicide Prevention Day (WSPD) was established as a joint effort between the International Association for Suicide Prevention (IASP) and the World Health Organization (WHO) in 2003 and focuses attention on a world-wide message that “Suicides are preventable.” WSPD’s 2024-2026 theme is “Changing the Narrative on Suicide” with an associated call to action of “Start the Conversation”. From the IASP website: Changing the narrative on suicide requires systemic change. It's about shifting from a culture of silence and stigma to one of openness, understanding, and support. #WorldSuicidePreventionDay At Adelphi Values, we recognize the critical aspect of safety for not only the patients we interact with, but also our team members. Implementing interviewer and patient safeguarding strategies to ensure necessary discussions around mental health is a critical part of our practice. Since 1967, International Literacy Day (ILD) celebrations have taken place annually around the world to remind the public of the importance of literacy as a matter of dignity and human rights, and to advance communities and individuals towards a more literate and sustainable society (https://lnkd.in/gXCapfDB). This year’s theme is “Promoting multilingual education: Literacy for mutual understanding and peace” (https://lnkd.in/ga2-QRPg). At Adelphi Values, scientific literacy is centered in our research and work. After all, literacy bridges gaps between cultures, enhancing our understanding of the world around us and empowering us to make informed decisions based on facts, research, and knowledge. Adelphi Values is committed to supporting inclusive research to promote the health and wellbeing of people across the globe. We show this by way of our inclusive research practices that center the patient voice. Celebrated annually on August 19th, World Humanitarian Day recognizes “volunteers, professionals and crisis-affected people who deliver urgent health care, shelter, food, protection, water and much more” [source: https://lnkd.in/djSW2Dd] and pays tribute to the 22 United Nations and relief agency staff who died in a bombing in Baghdad in 2003. The theme for 2024 is #ActForHumanity which “confront[s] the normalization of attacks on civilians, including humanitarians, and impunity under International Humanitarian Law (IHL).” While factors driving unprecedented levels of need grow increasingly complex, so too do the challenges humanitarian workers face. “As climate change and the COVID-19 pandemic intensify hunger, deepen poverty, and fan the flames of conflicts over scarce resources” [source: https://lnkd.in/eZfUJaaS], humanitarian workers persist to save lives and deliver “food, water, shelter, education, health, nutrition and protection”. Celebrated from the 18th of July to the 17th of August every year, South Asian Heritage Month was co-founded by Jasvir Singh CBE and Dr. Binita Kane in 2020 in the UK to honor and celebrate the influence and presence of South Asian cultures and communities. These dates represent important historical milestones in Indian Independence and the establishment of the India, Pakistan and Bangladesh borders, and to highlight to the importance of raising awareness of South Asian history and diversity of South Asian identities today. South Asia is made up of Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, The Maldives, Nepal, Pakistan and Sri Lanka. Adelphi Values recognizes South Asian Heritage Month as an important opportunity to recognize South Asian heritage and cultures, and to bring South Asian voices and narratives to the forefront to share knowledge and stories with people from around the globe. We prioritize diversity and inclusion through our DEI-B initiatives and research studies that encompass a wide range of lived experiences, including race, ethnicity, age, sex, and sexual orientation, to benefit all communities (source https://lnkd.in/gdrbETsV). Today, we celebrate the International Day of the World’s Indigenous Peoples, designated as a day to honor Indigenous cultures and recognize the unique needs of Indigenous groups. This includes the crucial need to address health disparities in Indigenous populations, such as higher disease rates and lower life expectancies. The theme of this year’s observance is “Protecting the rights of Indigenous Peoples in voluntary isolation and initial contact”. These specific groups of Indigenous peoples can face unique health risks, such as being exposed to novel diseases through external contact, adding to the long list of health impacts on Indigenous communities. ? Please join us today in honoring the International Day of the World’s Indigenous Peoples, learning more about Indigenous issues, and standing up for Indigenous peoples’ rights. As an organization committed to fostering diversity, inclusivity, and equity in all aspects of our work and research, Adelphi Values is proud to spread awareness of this important day. ?
