AI-powered personalization increases phishing fail rates nearly 8x. A major healthcare system with over 6000 staff members performed a phishing simulation. Half of the staff received a standard, traditional phishing email. Non-customized, riddled with mistakes, and translated with dated technology, the traditional phishing email was only opened and clicked by 7% of recipients. The other half of the organization received personalized phishing emails that referenced current events at the hospital. Despite the unusual sender domain, lack of punctuation, and very evident grammatical errors, 55% of recipients clicked on the link. You can read the full study here: https://lnkd.in/g2M6g3q7. Adaptive's AI phishing simulations automatically pull in relevant company and executive information to personalize phishing tests, preparing your organization for these next-generation attacks across email, sms, voice, and deepfake video. See an example below, and sign up to see a custom OSINT-powered phishing simulation at adaptivesecurity.com.

As the cost of intelligence declines, cyber criminals gain access to powerful new methods for scaling phishing campaigns and other attacks.

Okay, this is a pretty scary thought... Deepseek models will likely lead to an enormous increase in the volume and quality of social engineering attacks. We saw a 4X increase in phishing emails since ChatGPT came out 2 years ago, and its still very expensive. Deepseek will make attack creation very cheap, with limited safety controls. My favorite post explaining the impact of deepseek is from Gavin Baker (link in the comments). "a distilled version of r1 can be run locally at the edge on a high end work station (someone referenced a Mac Studio Pro). That means that a similar model will run on a superphone in circa 2 years. If inference moves to the edge because it is “good enough,” we are living in a very different world with very different winners" Attackers can run these models on the edge, no safety controls, across the workstation on my desk today. And soon, off their smartphones. Get ready for a HUGE increase in AI-Powered attacks.

We made Adaptive Security to stop the next generation of AI-powered cyber attacks like deepfakes, GenAI phishing, Smishing and more.? Here is a bit more background on why: In September 2024, an email claiming to be from Dmytro Kuleba, Ukraine’s foreign minister, landed in the inbox of Senator Benjamin L. Cardin, chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee. The email requested a Zoom call. When the video call began, the person on screen looked and sounded just like Kuleba, and the conversation initially seemed normal. But things took a strange turn. The caller started asking unusual, politically charged questions about missile strikes on Russian territory and the upcoming U.S. elections—topics that seemed out of character. Suspicious, Senator Cardin ended the call and reported the incident to the State Department. Investigators later confirmed the caller was not Kuleba at all but a deepfake likely to gain sensitive policy information. Since the launch of ChatGPT, phishing attacks have grown by 4,171%. Now, anyone can run a sophisticated cyber attack in minutes - over email, SMS, phone calls, or even video zoom calls. In the last year alone, we have seen over 100K estimated deepfake attacks in the USA. In a recent attack, a scammer stole $25 million dollars using a zoom deepfake which impersonated a company executive. Few companies are ready for GenAI-powered attacks. Most security training content is outdated, boring, and irrelevant. 77% of employees say they “zone out” during security training. Adaptive estimates that up to 60% of employees will fail a GenAI-powered attack.?? In early 2024, we launched Adaptive to significantly reduce the risk of AI-powered attacks by up to 90%. We currently offer two products: Adaptive Phishing and Adaptive Training. Adaptive Phishing identifies weak points by simulating GenAI cyber attacks over email, SMS, chat, and voice. Businesses can customize these attacks to utilize features like deepfakes of their executive team, open source intelligence of their company, and known attack vectors. Adaptive Training educates employees on new and emerging security threats like deepfakes, smishing, and social media attacks. Material is broken down into engaging 3-7 minute modules, optimized for mobile and desktop viewing. Content is automatically personalized for every business. Today, Adaptive is growing fast working with leading businesses including regional and national banks, leading tech companies, and critical health systems. Adaptive’s mission is to protect people from AI-powered cyber attacks. Over the next decade, we will work tirelessly to stay one step ahead of attackers with new cutting-edge bold products. We are just getting started.
