ADAPT at Colorado School of Mines

Contour offset is a majorly understudied parameter in powder bed fusion. We investigated the influence of outer contour offset and contour melt pool sizes on surface roughness and near surface porosity on 316L stainless steel in #additivemanufacturing. I presented the results of this study at the 2024 Solid Freeform Fabrication conference this past summer, and my conference paper was just released in the conference proceedings. Have you ever wondered why as-built surface roughness in #PBF-LB metals varies so much? Turns out that?the near-surface melt pools and their interactions with the bulk material has a strong influence on the surface roughness. We investigated the influence of contour laser power and scanning speed on near-surface melt pools and surface roughness across multiple #additivemanufacturing platforms and alloys. Another great member's meeting today! We focused on the theme post-print processing with presentations on rapid sintering, support removal, surface finishing and heat treatment. Big thanks to our speakers Geoff Brennecka, Owen Hildreth, Steve Midson, and Andrew Cassese (Quintus Technologies). We also had an informative discussion with our member's presenting on their biggest impediments to the full adoption of #additivemanufacturing in production. We will use these inputs to revise our road map to ensure we are aligning our research and education with industry-driven challenges to advance AM! Great job with this paper, Charles Smith! Volumetric energy density is not a great tool to develop parameters free of porosity defects. Processing maps formulated with models for specific defect types developed in this work have much greater predictive power. https://lnkd.in/geG8XWcU
