Time is your greatest ally when it comes to investing. The earlier you start, the more time your money has to grow through compound interest. The longer your money is invested, the larger the effect of compounding becomes. If you invest $1,000 at age 20 with an average return of 7% annually, by age 60, that initial $1,000 could grow to $14,000. If you wait until you're 30 to invest the same amount, you’ll only end up with around $7,600 by the time you're 60. But if you wait until you're 40 to invest the same amount, you'll only end up with around $3,400 by age 60. Can you have a high net worth and still be poor? Yes. In many cases, people with a high net worth may own large homes, luxury items, or have expensive tastes. But if their income doesn’t align with their spending habits, they might struggle with debt, live paycheck to paycheck, or even face bankruptcy. Take Burt Reynolds, for example. He was a major movie star in the '60s, '70s, and '80s, but was forced to declare bankruptcy in the '90s. Reynolds spent heavily on real estate, a private jet, 150 horses, and over $100,000 on toupees in the '80s, according to a Vanity Fair profile. After an expensive marriage to Loni Anderson, he also faced a costly divorce. This shows that wealth isn’t just about the assets you own. It’s about managing your money wisely. No matter how much you make or how valuable your assets are, without proper financial planning, cash flow management, and responsibility, you can still end up in financial trouble.
