The race to share a hot take or jump on a trending story with no regard for the facts can spread misinformation across the internet, and have devastating consequences for the subject of these campaigns. In one such case however, the afflicted party is fighting back against the media powerhouses: "Barstool Sports seems to be putting forth a full-court press of apologies to Ole Miss freshman Mary Kate Cornett after the company played a seemingly influential role in proliferating a false rumor about her... The NBC News report indicated that Portnoy and Barstool lawyers were given two options: litigation or mediation, with Portnoy opting for the latter." The NO FAKES Act which was initially introduced in 2024 has been given new life with support from YouTube: "As a group of United States (US) Senators re-introduced an anti-deepfake regulation in the US Congress, they received YouTube’s backing for the regulation. This anti-deepfake act, called the “Nurture Originals, Foster Art, and Keep Entertainment Safe Act” or the NO FAKES Act, seeks to protect people’s voice and likeness from replication through artificial intelligence (AI) models without consent."
