Homeschooling in America vs. Homeschooling in Hawai‘i: A Different Reality
In the continental U.S., homeschooling is often seen as an alternative choice—a way for families to customize education based on personal beliefs or academic preferences. In Hawai‘i, for many of our ‘ōpio (youth), homeschooling isn’t just a choice. It’s a necessity.
At Kaulike Academy, we see a growing number of Native Hawaiian students leaving traditional school systems—not because they don’t want to learn, but because the system wasn’t built for them. Many face environments that dismiss their culture, limit their potential, and fail to nurture their gifts.
We created this space because our ‘ōpio deserve better. They deserve an education rooted in Hawaiian values, one that nurtures their connection to ‘āina, community, and their own self-discovery. They deserve a space that uplifts them, not forces them to fit into a system that was never designed for their success.
We are incredibly grateful to Wai Wai Collective who have allowed us to be in their spaces and other community organizations who recognize this reality—who see our keiki, understand the urgency, and offer support so that we can provide alternative educational pathways.
Our youth are leaving traditional schools not because they are giving up, but because they are choosing to thrive in learning environments that empower them. And that choice should be honored, supported, and celebrated.
It’s time to rethink education in Hawai‘i. Our keiki’s future depends on it.
