The steel industry is responsible for 11% of global CO2 emissions, threatening to derail climate goals and the 1.5C limit. But steel producers can help preserve a livable climate, if they act decisively to take coal out of steelmaking. The technology to transform the steel production process is already there. A clean alternative to coal-based steelmaking, includes new technologies, like hydrogen-based direct iron reduction (H2-DRI) that uses green hydrogen to replace coal.
