The farmers the #ActionOnFood hub has been supporting through media relations, and who have been part of dialogues and workshops across the #COP29 Plenary, Policy and Roundtable zones presented tea from Sri Lanka as a thank you for creating a safe and welcoming space. We need to acknowledge the people at the heart of our food systems. It is the farmers who we rely on for our food – and who will be integral for a successful food systems transition. Likewise, it is the knowledge and skills of the Indigenous Peoples and local communities that will be urgently needed for biodiversity restoration. Finance, policy, and decision making must recognize this so meaningful action and a just transition on food can be achieved. 关于我们
We are a group of international food systems organisations calling for urgent food systems transformation. We collectively hosted the first ever Food Systems Pavilion at COP27 and are building on this momentum to continue campaigning for more healthy, sustainable and equitable food systems. The Action On Food will focus on convening and unifying stakeholders across the food and climate movements and spanning the public, private and not-for-profit sectors, from farmers and youth to policy makers and scientists. The Action on Food Hub is a collaboration between three food pavilions (Food4Climate Pavillon, Food Systems Partnership and Future Economy Forum), who are coming together at #COP29 and beyond to create #ActionOnFood

The #ActionOnFood Hub hears from Hunter Lovins, a leader in food systems transformation, who highlights the vital importance of climate finance. “#COP29 - the ‘finance COP’ - must succeed. The world needs for its nations to step up and commit to spend the money to counter the climate crisis. We have the solutions, but especially for those in countries now saddled with crushing debt, it is essential that we invest to implement them. Failure threatens us all. NOW Partners Foundation will be there setting forth the opportunities and helping governments, companies and communities seize them.”

?? Food systems leaders provide unique insights into how we think through the transition to healthy, sustainable, resilient and equitable food systems. Richard Zaltzman, Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of EIT Food, Europe’s largest food innovation community, stated: ? “While the political stage may be under increasing scrutiny, the urgency to transform our food systems continues to grow. As one of our largest greenhouse gas emitters and with over 10 billion mouths to feed by 2030, we need to maintain momentum and drive action on resilient, equitable and sustainable food systems now - not in another year. ? EIT Food is here at #COP29 united with over 300 food systems actors - farmers, Indigenous Peoples, businesses, financial institutions and civil society - to demand #ActionOnFood, to break down siloes and to ensure crucial conversations are happening and leading to real commitments. COP28 was a step forward with food systems moving up the agenda and notable announcements like the Emirates declaration, but it is not enough. This year, we’re here to push the boundaries even further and are working as one community to solidify the food sector's role both in and out of the negotiation rooms.”

?? One year on from the launch of the Alliance of Champions for Food Systems Transformation, we are celebrating the progress made by member countries during Food, Agriculture and Water Day here at COP29, inspiring others to follow their lead, and urging governments & financial institutions to deliver #climatefinance for #foodsystems. We are delighted that the Government of #Tanzania has now announced its intention to join the Alliance, and we very much look forward to seeing what they achieve in partnership with existing members. Here is just a taste of what has been achieved by member countries in the last year: In #Brazil, the promotion of sustainable agroforestry practices via a National Program for Productive Forests (Programa Nacional de Florestas Produtivas). In #Cambodia, the deployment of 1,600 agriculture officers in agricultural communes across the country, developing modern agricultural cooperatives to improve access to markets, capital and water. In #Norway, an annual policy dialogue with farming unions to negotiate policy measures that are tailored to farmers’ needs. In #Rwanda, a commitment by 2030 to halve per capita food waste at the retail and consumer levels, and to reduce food losses in farm production and along supply chains. In #SierraLeone, the implementation of the national flagship ‘Feed Salone’ strategy to drive local food production sustainably. These examples show what’s possible when countries take a ‘whole of government’ approach to food systems transformation. Think of the impact that could be unlocked if more countries signed up to putting food at the centre of their climate action ?? We’ve all heard the stats: agriculture contributes nearly a third of global greenhouse gas emissions. Yet, food systems have the power to be a solution. With over 10 billion mouths to feed by 2030, we need resilient, sustainable, and equitable food systems — and we need them now. ???? This urgency takes centre stage on #COP29 Food, Agriculture, and Water Day, where global leaders are focusing on transforming food systems to better serve people and the planet. The call for inclusive, collaborative #ActionOnFood has never been louder, as every delay in adopting sustainable practices adds to the toll on our future. ??? At the Action On Food Hub, which we at EIT Food are proud to coordinate alongside ProVeg International and Future Economy Forum, is working in partnership with the High-Level Climate Champions, on clear food systems asks which aim to amplify and drive action. These are based on the Food Systems Call to Action launched last year by the Climate Champions, as well as the work we have done over the past three years as a community, and therefore represent a significant alignment of a broad and diverse set of actors. Not just to build stronger connections between food systems, nature, and the climate, but to create conditions that enable food systems transformation to take place and the planet to flourish. Our food systems asks are: ?? Scale Finance, ?? Strengthen Global Targets, ?? Support farmers and indigenous peoples, ?? and Spotlight food in the Rio Conventions These asks unite food systems actors globally, presenting clear, actionable demands to governments, businesses, financial institutions, and policymakers. As Lucy Wallace, our Director of Global Relationships, reminds us, uniting food systems within the climate community is key to driving meaningful change. Together, we’re raising one voice, pushing for action that can deliver the crucial transformation to align food systems with climate goals. ?? Together we are setting out a shared vision for food systems transformation, catalysing commitments across food and agriculture while pledging concrete action — from reducing greenhouse gas emissions and scaling regenerative agriculture to funding sustainable food initiatives. ?? We need to act now.? https://bit.ly/3YUUW3w #GoodFoodForAll #ImprovingFoodTogether

With The Global FoodBanking Network we are at #Cop29 at #Baku #Azerbaijan There is a lot of activity here on #foodsystems and #waste and one of the most exciting moments for food systems at this COP is the #OrganicWaste Declaration. Countries are committing to reducing their organic waste, the main source of which is food waste and one of the largest sources of methane, a dangerous greenhouse gas. #Foodbanks around the world are collecting and redistributing food which reduces waste and methane, and feeds people in need. ??? Huge kudos to the High-Level Climate Champions for showing us the way at #COP29. Well worth reading about the progress being made to deliver #ActionOnFood for people, nature and climate. Gonzalo Mu?oz Abogabir CMG Rebecca Brooks
The newly released Food Systems Call to Action report showcases global progress in transforming food systems while highlighting the critical gaps that remain. Farmers, businesses, civil society, financial institutions and many others are already implementing solutions such as sustainable, regenerative, agroecological approaches, innovative financing, and sustainable consumption models. Yet, with food systems contributing to a third of global emissions and over 3 billion people unable to afford healthy diets, the need for action is more urgent than ever. The report emphasizes centering efforts on frontline food actors, particularly women and youth, promoting a just transition, and fostering multi-stakeholder collaboration. With COP29 as a backdrop, this call serves as a rallying point to accelerate change and ensure food systems deliver for people, nature, and climate. It’s not just about meeting goals—it’s about rethinking food systems for a resilient, equitable future. Read more: https://lnkd.in/dqAcyTki
