Preservation Chicago has announced its Chicago 7 Most Endangered sites! Check out their website for in depth descriptions of each location, listed this year are two locations we'd love to draw further attention to- as well as the partner organizations! ?? ??Walser House On February 4, Landmarks Illinois Advocacy Manager Kendra Parzen attended a case conference in Cook County Circuit Court for the Walser House at 42 N. Central Ave. in Chicago’s Austin neighborhood. Walser House was designed by Frank Lloyd Wright and home to the Teague family since 1970. Since owner Anne Teague passed away in 2019, the building has been deteriorating and has been stuck in legal limbo resulting from a reverse mortgage. Landmarks Illinois has been working behind the scenes with partners Austin Coming Together, Frank Lloyd Wright Conservancy and Preservation Chicago since early 2024 to alert the city to the poor condition of the building and make sure that it is secure. We intend to advocate through upcoming court proceedings for the building to go to new ownership that can rehabilitate it. A hearing date is scheduled for March 11. Check out the FLW website:https://ow.ly/LNak50VaAUy ??The Clarence Darrow Bridge in Jackson Park The Clarence Darrow Bridge serves as an important pathway to connect the west and east sides of the park just south of the Museum of Science and Industry Columbia Basin lagoon. Parts of the bridge predate the World Columbian Exposition of 1893, with the original bridge designed in 1880 by Daniel Burnham and John Wellborn Root. Frederick Law Olmsted retained the structure in his redesign of Jackson Park in 1895. In 1957, this new bridge was re-named the Clarence Darrow Memorial Bridge, dedicated to the legendary Chicago attorney, Clarence Darrow. The bridge has long been closed to foot traffic, however, and is in need of restoration. In 2024, Landmarks Illinois awarded a $2,000 grant to help determine a preservation plan for the historic structure that park advocates say would help seniors and others with limited mobility issues navigate Jackson Park more easily. Led by the vision of Austin Coming Together and Westside Health Authority, the once shuttered Emmet Elementary School will house a workforce training center, re-entry programs, and a BMO U.S. branch with financial coaching for residents. ? United Way is grateful to be a partner in this work and excited to see this vision come to life on the West Side! ? #LIVEUNITED #AspireCenter?
Today, President Preckwinkle, along with community developers visited the newly constructed Aspire Center located on the westside of Chicago.
