Classes 5-8 Vehicles Update ?? February preliminary North America Class 8 net orders were 18,300 units, down 34% y/y. “After the strong end to 2024, the past two months have largely been defined by trade and economic policy uncertainty, as the new administration has thrown a wrench into business planning,” shared Carter Vieth, Research Analyst at ACT Research. He continued, “Whether the slowdown in orders is a result of moderating economic activity or a response to the newfound uncertainty remains an open question. In February, Class 8 orders dropped 34% y/y to 18,300 units. Seasonally adjusted, Class 8 orders fell 28% from January to 16,700 units (198k SAAR), the lowest SA reading in almost two years.” Regarding medium duty, he added, “MD Classes 5-7 orders continued their slowly deflating trajectory into still historically elevated (if less so) truck and bus backlogs. ACT's preliminary look at February NA Classes 5-7 orders puts the month's volume at 17,100 orders, down 11% y/y.”

  • ?Day 2 of Market Vitals Seminar Featured Economic and CV Market Updates? Day 2 included a freight, Class 8, and trailer market update and forecast presented by Tim Denoyer, VP and Senior Analyst at ACT Research, Kenny Vieth, President and Senior Analyst at ACT Research, Jennifer McNealy, Director–CV Research Analysis & Publications at ACT Research, and Carter Vieth, Research Analyst at ACT Research. According to Denoyer, “For-hire capacity is contracting, and private fleets are slowing, with Class 8 tractor capacity still growing slightly. Rates will be driven by tighter supply this year.” “A big theme of 2025 is a weak tractor market versus a strong vocational market. For-hire carriers are still cash constrained, and inventory correction doesn’t support higher tractor build rates. On the vocational side, there is stimulus money yet to be spent, good visibility into continued end-market strength, and longer asset life cycles,” added Carter Vieth. There are economic and freight improvements, but does that equal a trailer industry uptick? According to McNealy, “Not yet.” She continued, “We have seen an increase in trailer net orders recently, but we’re also in the stronger intake months of the order season, so it’s not yet clear if there is an increase in demand or just cyclicality at play. 2025 is on target to be subdued, but a rebound is coming.” Save the date for the next ACT Research Market Vitals Seminar on August 20-21, 2025: https://hubs.la/Q038ShZn0
