Although cigarette smoking rates have been declining for decades, cigarette smoking remains the most preventable cause of serious illness and death. Smoking causes an estimated 480,000 deaths in the US every year, and about 3 out of every 10 cancer deaths. No matter your age or how long you’ve been smoking, quitting improves health, both immediately and over the long term. The American Cancer Society is encouraging people who smoke to start day one of their journey to a smoke-free life on the Great American Smokeout. Wearing pink, making strides, and fundraising for the #1 not-for-profit organization working to end breast cancer as we know it, for everyone, doesn’t just happen in the month of October. The Hope Lodge Nashville offers a home away from home for people facing cancer and their caregivers when cancer treatment is far away. We are so grateful to Massive Mission for helping us bring greater awareness through telling this story with our Nashville Discovery Ball.

Sonia Irusta was diagnosed with stage 4 lung cancer in 2020 and given nine months to live. The American Cancer Society Hope Lodges offer a free home away from home during treatment so people with cancer can focus on getting better. The Nashville Hope Lodge has provided 14,727 nights thus far in 2024. The need is great, and we cannot do it alone.
