In a new interim technical report, #SERC researchers Peter Beling, Tyler Cody and Stephen Adams of Virginia Tech and Virginia Tech National Security Institute, plus SERC CTO Tom McDermott, discuss their Trusted Artificial Intelligence Systems Engineering Challenge, sponsored by the Office of the Under Secretary of Defense for Research and Engineering and the US Army DEVCOM Armaments Center Systems Engineering Directorate. From their executive summary: "This research addresses the challenge of designing and operating systems that contain AI and autonomy with uncertain performance to provide overall systems behaviors that responsible and trustworthy. Rather than focusing on changes to the AI model to increase trust, this research focuses on developing and improving SE methods to provide this increased level of trust." Seven student teams submitted white papers and presentations for the challenge, representing Purdue University, University of Arizona, The George Washington University, Virginia Tech, University of Virginia, Stevens Institute of Technology and Old Dominion University. Tim Sherburne and Scott Lucero from Virginia Tech also contributed to the project. Lucero presented with Beling at the recent SERC Research Review and the AI4SE & SE4AI Research and Application Workshop. A new #AIRC report explores #megaprojects in the #DoD, with insights from Tom McDermott, Zhongyuan Yu, Amro M. Farid, Dennis Folds, Nicole Hutchison, Molly C. Nadolski, Gordon Kranz and Megan Clifford. "The United States Department of Defense has long been a sponsor of megaprojects and continues to transition from more standalone platform-centric systems to mega-systems. Megaproject failures and successes from commercial programs offer lessons learned for improving the performance of Major Defense Acquisition Programs (MDAPs), which are often megaprojects and also may be useful for smaller, less complex acquisitions."
