  • At the start of February, we launched the "Heart Work" campaign — a tribute to the unwavering passion, dedication, and commitment of our incredible educators and staff. This campaign highlights how public schools are more than places of learning — they are centers of opportunity, inclusion, and support for students, families, and the entire community. In this inspiring video, Alexandria City Public Schools (ACPS) Superintendent Dr. Melanie Kay-Wyatt shares what Heart Work means at ACPS. It’s the collective care and purpose-driven efforts that create welcoming schools where all students thrive and succeed. The Heart Work campaign is also a call to action. ACPS is committed to celebrating, retaining, and attracting top talent by fostering a culture where every staff member feels valued, supported, and empowered. At the same time, we want to remind families that ACPS offers a high-quality education in an inclusive, nurturing environment where every student matters. ?? Watch Dr. Kay-Wyatt’s message and join us in celebrating the incredible Heart Work happening across ACPS. ?? Help us shine a spotlight on public education by sharing your own Heart Work stories! Post photos, videos, or messages using #ACPSHeartWork — and don’t forget to tag us to be featured!

  • Congratulations to the 16 educators who have received or renewed their National Board for Professional Teaching Standards (NBPTS) certification. A National Board Certification is the highest professional honor available in education, recognizing accomplished teachers and promoting continued growth and improvement across schools nationwide. Gatherings That Move People — Stories That Sustain Them

At Ascend at the Aspen Institute we like to start our meetings with a moment of human connection. Today, my colleague Chidi Jenkins posed a question that instantly sparked reflection: Who was your favorite middle school teacher, and what’s a memory that stands out? It was the perfect question—coming right after Kendrick Lamar’s generational Super Bowl performance, in the middle of Black History Month, and against the backdrop of today’s political climate. Immediately, I thought of Mr. Shabazz, my civics and history teacher. I once told him, “I don’t like history—it’s just a bunch of dates.” From that moment on, it felt like he made it his mission to prove me wrong. Every lesson, he showed me that history isn’t just about dates—it’s about stories, people, and movements that shape our world. And civics? He taught me that civics isn’t just a subject—it’s how we make history. Grateful for teachers like Mr. Shabazz, who make learning come alive. Who was that teacher for you? Aspiring IT Professional Seeking Job Opportunities

Some of you know me for my IT background, but what you may not know is that I also teach middle schoolers—an experience that has been both fulfilling and impactful. Helping students develop technical and business skills in the classroom has been an incredibly rewarding journey. Thank you to Tricia S. Jacobs, PhD, Director of Career & Technical Education & Workforce Development, for this incredible recognition. As a first-year CTE teacher at Alexandria City Public Schools, receiving this award means so much to me. A special thanks to my mentor, Carolyn Tatem, for her invaluable support in this journey so far. #ACPS #CTE #CareerAndTechnicalEducation
