关于我们

The American College of Occupational and Environmental Medicine (ACOEM) represents more than 4,500 physicians and other health care professionals specializing in the field of occupational and environmental medicine (OEM). Founded in 1916, ACOEM is the nation's largest medical society dedicated to promoting the health of workers through preventive medicine, clinical care, research, and education. A dynamic group of physicians encompassing specialists in a variety of medical practices is united via the College to develop positions and policies on vital issues relevant to the practice of preventive medicine both within and outside of the workplace. While national in scope, the College is composed of local component societies in the United States and Canada, whose members hold scientific meetings and network on a regular basis. ACOEM sponsors the annual American Occupational Health Conference, the nation's largest conference of its kind, each spring.

  • Our mini-interview series for #AOHC2025 continues with Natalie Hartenbaum, MD, MPH, FACOEM, who said "my favorite and truly most important part of ACOEM is networking, catching up with close friends, and meeting new colleagues, many of whom have become friends." ?? Register today for AOHC 2025 at https://buff.ly/QdedzhU How did you first become interested in your session topic? I have been involved with the medical certification of commercial motor vehicle operators for several decades, first as an examiner, then as a member of a negotiated rulemaking committee, and later as an educator, author, and active participant in various FHWA/FMCSA committees. How have you changed your own practice or your own approach to patients because of your session topic? Constant change is needed in this area, with new regulations or guidance (or lack thereof), keeping in mind the current best medical practice. With the 2024 Medical Examiner Handbook, examiners cannot just look to the "cookbook" on how to make a certification determination but must use evidence-based information to perform a risk assessment and evaluate whether the individual is at risk of sudden or gradual impairment or incapacitation. What’s a common misconception about your session topic? That we will provide all the answers. In fact, at this time there are very few "correct" answers, as each determination MUST be based on an individual assessment BUT the examiner must understand the diagnosis, treatment, prognosis, and comorbidities of each medical condition they encounter. After understanding those issues, the examiner must conduct a risk assessment on the individual’s risk of sudden or gradual impairment or incapacitation over the course of the certification duration. Without that thorough understanding and assessment, the examiner is making the WRONG certification determination. What are you most looking forward to doing at AOHC 2025 (besides speaking)? I have been attending AOHC (and, for those more seasoned ACOEM members, also SOTAC) for decades and my favorite and truly most important part of ACOEM is networking, catching up with close friends, and meeting new colleagues, many of whom have become friends. As I always say, there is a lot I do not know, but through ACOEM meetings, I know who will know or who can put me in contact with someone that does. Who has inspired you in your career in medicine? There are so many that inspired me on my path through occupational medicine, both by encouraging me to do something I thought I could not or challenging me when they thought there was something I could not accomplish; I could not name them all without forgetting someone. One thing I can say is that I met almost all of them through ACOEM.
