Hackathon Victory!???? Excited to share that my teammate Ubaidullah Khan and I won the Rowdy Hacks Hackathon - sponsor’s track. We took on the Swivel Company Challenge, which focused on creating banking and payment solutions for the unbanked and underbanked populations. This experience pushed us to think creatively, work collaboratively, and leverage technology to solve real-world problems. It was a powerful reminder of how tech can drive meaningful change. Proof that sleep-deprived minds and an endless supply of coffee can pay off!???? A huge thank you to UTSA RowdyHacks, SWIVEL, The University of Texas at San Antonio, UTSA School of Data Science, the mentors and my teammate, who guided and supported us throughout this journey. This weekend at UTSA RowdyHacks was so cool! It was an incredible experience to return as an alumnus, represent SWIVEL as the title sponsor, and hear from our director of software engineering, Neil Gandhi for his love of Back to the Future ???? The lead-up to the event gave me countless opportunities to dive deeper into different parts of my company and gain insights into Joshua Luke’s vision for engaging with the San Antonio community. ?? Exciting News from UTSA RowdyHacks 2025 ?? I’m thrilled that our team successfully developed an Evil Twin Attack Simulation project at this year’s RowdyHacks hackathon. This project was designed to raise awareness about Wi-Fi security threats by mimicking real-world cyber-attacks and helping users understand the importance of securing their networks. This past weekend, I had the incredible opportunity to participate in the Los Datos conference and Rowdy Datathon, both hosted at The University of Texas at San Antonio. It was a whirlwind of excitement, learning, and hard work! At the Los Datos conference, I presented our paper for ScooterLab , sharing insights from our innovative work on micromobility research using custom-built sensor boxes attached to e-scooters. The conference was a fantastic platform to showcase our project and engage with experts and peers passionate about data-driven research. The Rowdy Datathon followed the next morning, and I teamed up with Christina Duthie to tackle a challenging problem: addressing the decline in pollinator populations. Over two days of intense competition with more than 30 teams, we developed tools to combat this issue by working with large real-world datasets. We applied Python, R, and SQL to create custom LLMs that helped us efficiently analyze data and build solutions against the clock. It was an unforgettable experience filled with new challenges, overnight coding sessions, and amazing learning opportunities. Competing with such talented individuals and being exposed to cutting-edge technologies made it all the more exciting. This weekend gave me valuable insights into real-time problem-solving with data and provided an incredible platform to learn, collaborate, and push boundaries. I don't usually post on LinkedIn, but I wanted to share this moment! For three of us, this was our first Data Science - based hackathon, and yet we decided to test ourselves and go straight for the intermediate track when competing. This challenge revolved around performing statistic and visual analysis on the recent decline of the Monarch Butterfly population, a crucial pollinator, using poorly structured datasets that contained a lot of missing information. It was a grueling challenge, but we were able to split up our tasks, format and normalize our data, and utilize multiple AI models to scan for different correlations, before using our negative binomial regression model for our final presentation. We also created a by-year visual heat map of the U.S. by county utilizing geopandas and other mapping Python libraries to demonstrate the changes in Monarch Butterfly sightings over the years, to illustrate both the decline, and change in migration patterns! This weekend, I participated in my first in-person hackathon (datathon) at UTSA RowdyHacks, partnered by the National Security Agency, The University of Texas at San Antonio, and #ACMUTSA, alongside my friends Suvan Kasina, Nihar Ravi, shreeshkumar lillyprabhu, Maneesh kumar Lillyprabhu, and Bhargav Ratala. Walking in, I was worried I’d be lost or unable to contribute as much, but with the support of amazing mentors like Mark Nelson and others, I was able to push my limits and learn so much more than I expected. I dove into web scraping, pivot tables in Excel, and worked on a predictor AI model. While the model is still a work in progress, I’m excited about its potential for developing insights and prediction charts using past data on milkweed, pests, and egg sightings. Thank you to the event partners for hosting such a delightful experience! I walked out feeling happy, not because we lost, but because of the amazing people we met and learned from throughout the event.
