???? On March 14, the Global Centre for Climate Mobility (GCCM), in partnership with the Botswana Ministry of Environment and Tourism (MET), jointly organized a focus group discussion with over 48 residents of the Gweta community, who shared insights on the changing climate events and their impacts. With over 7,000 residents, the Gweta Community is highly vulnerable to floods, which are caused by increasing rainfall patterns, changing seasons, and the community's growing population. Residents of Gweta are facing extreme heat, prolonged droughts, and intense but brief rainfall, leading to significant socio-economic challenges. These climate impacts cause loss and damage, forced mobility, infrastructure destruction, health issues, and job losses. Floods and extreme weather events are pushing people, especially youth, to leave their communities permanently. As environmental conditions worsen, job opportunities decline, driving internal mobility to urban centers like Maun, Francistown, and Gaborone. Participants suggested proactive climate adaptation measures, including building dams for water storage, investing in flood-resilient infrastructure, and promoting green and smart agriculture. They also called for a new approach to land allocation in Gweta to ensure that people do not reside or build houses in the flood plains. Additionally, residents affirm that planned relocation could be a major solution to the community’s vulnerability. As we engage key communities and sectors in hotspot areas across the country throughout March, this process will facilitate knowledge-sharing and collective action to address climate risks and advance adaptation efforts. It underscores the urgent need for adaptation policies that support both those who move and those who remain, ensuring resilience for all. These consultations have included so far: - Workshops in Gaborone, Jwaneng, Ghanzi, Kasane and Maun - Additional engagements in Mmopane, Lobatse, Goodhope, Kanye, and Serowe - Thematic workshops on the mining and tourism sectors - Focus group discussions at with communities in Gweta village Stay tuned for more insights from the Botswana Climate Mobility Deep Dive, and for the forthcoming release of the Botswana Climate Mobility Profile and Blueprint, which will provide an in-depth insight into climate mobility realities in Botswana. #ClimateMobility |? #BotswanaDeepDive

???? The ongoing Botswana Climate Mobility Deep Dive has made significant progress over the month of March, with consultations and thematic meetings engaging national government partners, local stakeholders, and affected communities to shape climate mobility strategies in Botswana. So far, we have completed four main workshops in Gaborone, Ghanzi, and Maun, two thematic workshops on mining and tourism, and a High-Level Breakfast Meeting with key decision-makers. Discussions have highlighted the growing impact of climate change on mobility patterns, particularly as farmers, miners, the tourism industry, and affected communities face increasing challenges due to extreme weather, water scarcity, and land degradation. Many stakeholders stressed the need for inclusive adaptation strategies, early warning systems, and sector-wide resilience plans. Upcoming consultations will continue in Francistown, Palapye, Jwaneng, and Kasane, with additional engagements in Mmopane, Lobatse, Goodhope, Kanye, and Serowe. The process will also include focus group discussions in Dukwi and Gweta village communities to ensure that localized perspectives are integrated into climate mobility strategies. As this phase of the Botswana Climate Mobility Deep Dive process nears completion, we are preparing for the upcoming release of the Botswana Climate Mobility Profile and Blueprint. These comprehensive resources will inform national efforts to address and harness climate mobility. They will also provide data-driven approaches for policy development, aiding in the mobilization of support for people-positive adaptation journeys and community resilience initiatives across Botswana. Stay tuned for further updates on the Botswana Climate Mobility Deep Dive process! #ClimateMobility |? #BotswanaDeepDive

????As climate stressors intensify, some urban areas in Botswana may see out-mobility by 2050. While cities like Maun, Francistown, and Kanye will continue to grow, climate pressures may push some residents to relocate. Projections suggest that between 1,500 and 2,800 people could leave urban areas due to climate stressors. However, the extent of this mobility will depend on economic development and the availability of essential services such as education, healthcare, and water infrastructure. Urban planning must integrate climate adaptation strategies to ensure that cities remain livable while supporting communities affected by mobility shifts. #ClimateMobility #BotswanaDeepDive

???? As part of our ongoing consultations in Botswana, the Global Centre for Climate Mobility (GCCM), in partnership with the Botswana Ministry of Environment and Tourism (MET), hosted a consultation workshop in Ghanzi on March 10th, bringing together 58 local experts and members of affected communities in Ghanzi, to discuss the growing impacts of climate change and climate mobility in the region. Experts also underscored the escalating impacts of climate events in Ghanzi, including land degradation, soil erosion, food shortages, water scarcity, and health risks. Discussions highlighted the increasing movement of crop and livestock farmers seeking better conditions. They also emphasized the loss of native fruit and vegetation cover, which is exposing the land to extreme weather events as temperatures rise and drought conditions intensify. While several policies are in place, stakeholders emphasized the need for a multi-sectoral approach to tackling climate challenges. The participants urged government ministries and the private sector to invest in adaptation initiatives that protect vulnerable communities and strengthen Botswana’s resilience. Additionally, participants called for enhanced early warning systems, increased climate awareness campaigns, and a greater focus on indigenous adaptive solutions to better prepare communities for future climate risks. ???? As part of our ongoing consultations in Botswana, the Global Centre for Climate Mobility (GCCM), in partnership with the Botswana Ministry of Environment and Tourism (MET), jointly organized a Mining Sector Thematic Workshop. The workshop brought together mining professionals and experts to discuss the growing impacts of climate change and climate mobility on the country’s mining sector. Discussions highlighted how climate events, such as extreme heat, drought, and flooding, are affecting mining operations, as prolonged drought is depleting available water resources, while extreme heat exposes miners to severe health concerns. Experts also highlighted the increasing impacts of mining activities on the environment, including deforestation, land degradation, soil erosion, excessive water, and high emissions. Experts noted that the emission footprint and degrading of land significantly put many mining communities in vulnerable situations. The mining professionals recommended the integration of renewable solutions for mining operations in the country while also calling for the sector to be decarbonized. Experts also called for the re-skilling of mining professionals to integrate sustainable planning into operations. As we engage key communities and sectors in hotspot areas across the country throughout March, this process will foster knowledge-sharing and collective action to address climate risks and advance climate adaptation efforts. It underscores the urgent need for adaptation policies that support both those who move and those who remain, ensuring resilience for all.
