Achieving meaningful police accountability requires sweeping reform. The Department of Justice’s recent report on the Trenton Police Department’s rampant misconduct signals the urgent need for change. “For New Jersey to live up to its values, our state must reimagine policing as we know it,” ACLU-NJ Executive Director Amol Sinha said. We have to take President-elect Trump at his word. “Trump is planning on the ugliest and worst deportation scheme that we’ve ever seen in the history of the United States, and it’s going to include going after the most vulnerable among us. It’s going to include racial profiling. It’s going to include workplace raids and community raids. It’s all stuff that’s very frightening and we as a state need to come together, push back and fight back against that wherever we can. If the first Trump administration is any indication, there’s going to be chaos, confusion, and family separation,” Executive Director Amol Sinha told Insider NJ. Read more: https://lnkd.in/eVBendWe

BREAKING: New documents obtained by the ACLU reveal that ICE is actively considering proposals to expand immigration detention capacity across New Jersey. The Garden State has already taken steps to oppose immigrant detention by phasing out ICE contracts and closing county-run ICE jails. But federal plans to expand detention in New Jersey continue, paving a way for the Trump administration to conduct mass detention and deportation of immigrant communities. This is unacceptable. Breaking: The U.S. Department of Justice issued a report today detailing rampant abuse and misconduct in the Trenton Police Department. These findings confirm what the city community has been saying for decades: officers engage in widespread misconduct with impunity, and at an immense human cost. Achieving meaningful accountability of police officers to the communities they’re meant to serve requires sweeping reform. This report should be the first step in bringing overdue systems of accountability to the city of Trenton. New Jerseyans deserve nothing less. Read our full statement: https://lnkd.in/dAjtZ9bF ?
