#Sudan: Multiple frontlines across Darfur to break the siege around El Fasher Between September and October, heavy clashes erupted across North Darfur as the RSF launched a major offensive on the state capital, El Fasher, the last major city in Darfur under SAF control. In response, the Darfur Joint Forces mobilized in the desert north of El Fasher, opening three new fronts in North and West Darfur. The RSF made advances on El Fasher from the north, east, and south, supported by drone strikes and artillery bombardments. Despite these advances, the SAF and Darfur Joint Forces pushed back against the RSF. The recent clashes in North Darfur have also intensified attacks on civilians, with the RSF and allied militias targeting Zaghawa communities, raising concerns over escalating ethnic violence. Proliferation and fragmentation of separatist groups in Anglophone Cameroon As the conflict in Anglophone #Cameroon fragments, many separatist groups now focus less on independence and more on controlling local areas. Infighting between separatist groups is increasing, alongside a rise in civilian targeting. Community self-defense groups and ethnic militias, such as the Mbororo, have also grown in number. These changes reflect a shift toward self-preservation through localized interests and illicit activities. Violence continues to escalate, with the second quarter of 2024 being the most violent so far. This fragmentation weakens the separatist movement’s bargaining position and complicates peace negotiations. Greater engagement with local organizations and leaders may be necessary to make mediation possible. Explore our latest Q&A for full insights: https://lnkd.in/ePYAb_hh

#Sudan: A major offensive links SAF troops in Khartoum On 26 September, the SAF launched one of its largest coordinated attacks to reconnect troops across the Khartoum tri-cities. Heavy airstrikes and artillery shelling preceded advances by SAF troops on key RSF positions. The offensive resulted in SAF regaining control of al-Halfaya and al-Izirgab neighborhoods in Bahri and lifting the siege on the Weapons Corps base in northern Bahri. These advances mark a major shift in the conflict, as the SAF now aims to break the siege on the General Command and Signal Corps bases by linking them with the Engineers Corps base through downtown Khartoum. If successful, the SAF would likely push south to connect with the Armored Corps base, further weakening the RSF's control of Khartoum. Turning the tide: The SAF's strategic offensive in Khartoum, Sudan From 7 September to 4 October 2024, #ACLED records 460 political violence events and over 1,810 reported fatalities in #Sudan, with most violence concentrated in Khartoum and North Darfur. The SAF launched its most significant offensive in Khartoum, forcing RSF troops into a defensive posture for the first time and leading to territorial losses in western Khartoum and northern Bahri. Meanwhile, SAF-aligned Darfur Joint Forces opened fighting on three frontlines in North and West Darfur states, aiming to divert the RSF attention from El Fasher— the only capital city in Darfur region which is still controlled by SAF. In south-central Sudan, the SAF regained control of the strategic Jebel Moya area, further surrounding RSF troops in Sennar state.
