We had such a great experience at the American Concrete Institute competition in Philadelphia! The team had such a great time competing, meeting new students from around the world, and learning more about concrete by attending the guest speakers sessions. We can’t wait for the next competition in Toronto, Canada for the Concrete Bowling Ball.

As October comes to an end, let’s take a moment to recap this month with our October Newsletter! -On October 17th, Emily Brown from KPFF Consulting Engineers was a guest speaker for our first general meeting! Emily discussed certain topics such as structural engineering and concrete. Amazing questions were asked from students and we hope everyone took away meaningful knowledge from the presentation. -On October 25th, the ACI Officers hosted a Concrete Mix day for Sacramento State College of Engineering and Computer Science students. This gave students the opportunity to gain hand on experience by making concrete pavers and it was a good opportunity to meet more students. Thank you to the students who came and participated in our concrete mix day! -As the officers prepare for the competition, we would like to discuss about our progress. Over the summer the officers began designing various mixes and test trials. We tried different material to find a way to perfect a pervious concrete cylinder to take to the competition. Which is why we have conducted weekly mixing days until we were satisfied with a mix design. -The competition in Philadelphia is on November 3rd and the team will be leaving on November 1st with the finalized cylinders. We developed a final design that we know will preform the best for the drainage and tensile strength. -The pervious concrete competition is on November 3rd, however the team will be leaving on November 1st. We developed a final design that we believe will preform best for drainage and tensile strength. We are excited to represent Sac State for the competition. -We would like to thank our sponsors; McCarthy Building Companies, Inc., SC Builders, Odin and Northern California & Western Nevada Chapter, ACI. Our team is very grateful of your donations and contributions.

On Friday, October 17th, the ACI Officers hosted a Concrete Mix Day! Concrete Mix Day was an activity focused to give students at Sacramento State College of Engineering and Computer Science the opportunity to have hands on experience and increase their knowledge about concrete. We created concrete pavers and concrete cylinders. The officers taught the students on how to measure the aggregate, cement, & water, mix the concrete, slump test, pouring and finishing. We had such a great time teaching the students! Thank you to all the students who came and participated in our Concrete Mix Day!
