    Being underpaid is a circumstance. Staying underpaid is a choice. ??? ? ? Many of you have been in my world for years, but when I get messages like this, I know I'm onto something. ? ?   • If you're hating your job, then there's a problem. You can be busy at your job. You can feel challenged at your job. You can even not like some people at your job. But if you overall HATE your job? Something's got to change. Now if you've been at the same place for a while, you might not want to abandon ship; however, there's a lot in your power to change the dynamics of how busy you are, how challenged you feel, how you feel about certain people... AND you can even get over hating your job. My clients experience this transformation. They go from being in a well-paid job they hate and end up stay well-paid in a job they enjoy.     DAY 5/5: Do you blame your misery on your job?? ? As I reflect on my burnout experience, I took zero responsibility. Instead, I blamed it on my job--an inconsiderate manager, weekly travel and no time for me. ?? ? But I'm the one that made matters worse:? ? I tortured myself by isolating from the people and things I loved. ? I tortured myself by cutting out exercise.? I tortured myself by eating takeout 3x/day and drinking alcohol to excess.? ? It was a toxic relationship I CREATED—but what I didn’t realize was that I had more power to break the cycle than I thought.? ? ??WHAT COULD I HAVE DONE TO PREVENT BURNOUT???? ? So many things, but here's a short list:? ? 1. Said "NO" more. ? My burnout began when I believed success meant saying yes to everyone and pushing myself to the limit. I was wrong—boundaries matter.? ? 2. Listen to my body. ? Before the ER visit, I masked my pain with pills and creams. I should have focused on understanding and addressing the root causes instead.? ? ?3. Asked for help sooner. ? After my burnout, I spiraled into self-doubt, thinking I had to fix it on my own. It took years to recover—I should’ve sought help from a professional (i.e., coach, mentor, therapist). Burnout is detrimental.? ?? ? I share this story to prevent others from having the same fate as me (or worse). ? ? Because this isn't just a one-off experience; for some of us, IT'S LITERALLY THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN LIFE AND DEATH.? ? If I can offer one word of advice: learn from my story and don't let it become yours.? ???? The best time to work on your burnout? 10 years ago.? ? The second best time? Today. ? ?     DAY 4/5: TBH, the months that followed were far more painful than my trip to the ER.? ? Once the physical symptoms subsided, the emotional burnout set in: ? ? - Am I smart enough?? ? - Am I capable enough?? ? - Is this the rest of my life? ? ? You want big things, but you’re also expecting your company to help you have a career comeback post-burnout. ? ? HERE’S THE THING: Your company isn't going to save you. ????? ? They're not going to help you out of a poor performance review. ? They're not going to position you after getting passed-up for promotion.? They're not going to ?create a flexible working arrangement after being diagnosed with a chronic health condition.? ? Because it’s not their job. It’s YOUR job.? ? ?     DAY 3/5: The new doctor arrived with a whole different set of questions. He saw something I didn't see. ?? ? ? Instead of asking about what I ate, he asked:? ? "Tell me about your life?."? "Tell me about your work.?"? "Tell me about your STRESS."? ? Once I explained my current work situation, he hypothesized that my body was having a stress reaction. ? ? He told me he was not going to give me any medicine. He turned on HGTV and walked out of the room. He said he’d be back in a bit. ? ? I freaked. ? ? It was Valentine's Day.? ? I had a flight to catch THAT NIGHT.? ? I had a date with my new boyfriend and I didn't want to get stuck in Minnesota for the weekend.? ?? To expedite this process... I laid back per the doctor’s orders.? ? I didn't open my laptop. (There was no internet.)? I didn't call anyone. (There was no service.)? I just watched TV.? ? When the doctor returned two hours later, my hives were gone.? ? Just as he suspected, my symptoms occurred as a result of stress. ? ? He urged me to consider the cost of my stress, because “if your lifestyle and this career continue in the same trajectory, it will only get worse."? ? At that moment, I declared February 14th, 2013 my official rock bottom. ? ? Deep down, I knew there had to be something better...? ? I didn't know "what" or "how", but I knew I would spend the rest of my life, or as long as it took to figure it out.? (??12 years later, I'm grateful to have supported thousands of individuals recover from their workplace burnout.)? ? ???But I know you're out there thinking... So now what?! Did I make my Valentine’s Day? Did I quit my job? Or tell-off my boss? ? ? Follow along ?? for the final two days to see what happened after I was discharged from the ER.? ?? ? P.S.     DAY 2/5: When I realized that my body was breaking out in hives, I started to panic. ? ? I've never had hives. ? ? I needed immediate support, but the only medical support available to me was the nearest ER, 20 minutes away. ? ? On my way out of the hotel restaurant, my manager reminded me: “bring your laptop with you.” ?WRONG #1?? ? I didn't think twice. I grabbed my laptop and got into the cab, heading to the ER. ??WRONG #2?? ? I was discharged around 2am. I intentionally emailed my team so that they could see the time stamp, and I said, "I was on the way back to the hotel and would I'd meet at our regular time in a few hours." ??WRONG #3?? ? I didn't feel up to going in, but I didn't feel like I had a choice. ??WRONG #4?? ? A few hours later, I went back to work. ????♀?? ? From the moment we arrived at the client's office, and as we were unpacking our laptops, my manager asked me, "What were you able to work on last night?"? ? Like clockwork, I felt hives begin to spread all over my body. Again.? ? My skin felt hot and my sense of control over the day seemed to slip from my grasp. ? ? I thought: "Didn't he get my email?", "Doesn't he care at all?", "WTF?!"? ? I excused myself and went to the bathroom. I looked in the mirror and noticed the tomato-colored skin that was taking over my body... AGAIN! ? ??? I uncomfortably excused myself from the office and went back to the ER for a second time.? ? How is this possible? What is going on?! WHAT'S WRONG WITH ME!?!?!? ? ? ?WHAT WENT WRONG HERE:?? 1. Do not ask someone headed to the hospital to work in the waiting room.? ? ? 2. Have the courage to tell your team that you will not be working from the hospital. Communicate your needs clearly and as soon as you can.? ? 3. Request the time off that you need. Don't expect others to give it to you. Speak up and advocate for yourself.? ? 4. When you don't feel good, don't go into the office. No job is ever worth your health or wellbeing.
