Building equitable food systems in Duwamish territory

The City of Seattle recently released their updated Food Action Plan - a robust strategic roadmap with actionable steps towards a more equitable, sustainable, and resilient local food system for farmers, food service workers, consumers, our non-human relatives, and everyone across our community. So proud of our team at African Community Housing & Development (ACHD) - and a huge debt of gratitude to our farmers and vendors - for all our work over the past four years to establish and grow the Delridge Farmers Market into a thriving community hub. Our model is demonstrating a viable new way for farmers markets to serve as vital spaces of food justice and community health equity, along with no-barrier economic development prioritizing BIPOC-owned businesses offering culturally relevant ofod and goods. Check out this sweet video from the City of Seattle to learn more about the Food Action Plan updates, our work, and the work of other amazing organizations and businesses across town leading the charge and inspiring critical action across our local food systems. https://lnkd.in/gPxHedpa

Implementing alternative-market housing solutions for more inclusive, connected, resilient and equitable communities.

Last Wednesday was a spectacular day to do a light rail and walking tour of some of the new affordable homeownership opportunities coming to the Columbia City and Othello neighborhoods. Such a treat to hear Bilan Aden, M. Ed and Rebecca Wold share about the creation and evolution of their partnership. African Community Housing & Development (ACHD) and Habitat for Humanity Seattle-King County are co-developing more than 60 affordable homes in the Rainier Valley over the next few years. These homes will be on land transferred, at no cost from the Seattle Office of Housing that was transferred, at no cost from Sound Transit and, of course, be permanently affordable! Thank you Mara D'Angelo, Thatcher Imboden, Rebecca Brunn and others for your foundational and continued work making the Rainier Valley Affordable Homeownership Initiative possible. Also got great vegan egg rolls at the ChuMinh Tofu & Veggie Deli just north of the Othello Station. Delicious!

  • ???????????? Hey! Did you know August is Black Business Month? We voted for our elected officials earlier this month, and now it’s time to vote with our dollars and support Black-owned businesses. Supporting Black-owned businesses is essential to the development of our diverse communities. We are excited that more Black entrepreneurs are opening small businesses nationwide – according to the most recent census, Black businesses support 3.6 MILLION jobs and create hundreds of BILLIONS in annual revenue. Despite this, only 1% of Black business owners obtain a business loan in their first year, forcing folks to rely on cash and support from family and friends.?#themoreyouknow????? ? Looking for an easy way to support? Join us at the Delridge and SeaTac Farmers Markets! *Delridge is open every Saturday, from 10am – 2pm, and *SeaTac’s next pop-up is Wednesday, September 4th, from 3pm – 7pm. ?
