Before starting ACG in 1986, our founders—Tony Butrum and Mary Harpenau—worked together at Thoughtware, a Miami-based company that developed management and marketing training software. Tony was a developer and Mary a designer for the Jingle Disk, an animated Christmas card Thoughtware sent to its customers on 5 ?-inch floppy disks. If you’re a fan of retro PC tech, you’ll love it. ?? It includes all the magic of its time, including 4-color, 320x200 highly-pixelated CGA graphics and 1-bit audio music playing from the original PC’s speaker. It was programmed in a combination of x86 machine language to provide sufficient animation performance (those “giant” bitmaps aren’t going to move themselves) and compiled BASIC for logic and flow. It was such a huge hit with Thoughtware’s customers, senior management decided to sell the Jingle Disk as a commercial product the following year (1985), and?it sold 500,000+ copies! It’s success resulted in Thoughtware spinning off a new company, Hi-Tech Expressions, which began developing and selling animated cards and games. Neither Thoughtware or Hi-Tech Expressions still exist, but 38+ years later, ACG is still around and creating amazing animations, videos, interactive experiences, infographics, and many other digital creations.
