  • We're thrilled to officially introduce ACE Sentinel: a groundbreaking addition to the ACE Aerodrome suite! ACE Sentinel is an advanced #BAS #BACnet network diagnostics tool that visualizes complicated networks, enables comprehensive oversight, and allows for pinpoint troubleshooting and health monitoring. Designed in collaboration with the Dartmouth College facilities team, ACE Sentinel is a valuable new tool for #SmartBuildingSolution providers and folks administering campus-wide OT networks alike. With the release of ACE Sentinel, you can: ?? Visualize & Document: Map out your building or campus BACnet communication networks ?? Track?Changes: Use our compare functionality to monitor network evolution over time ?? Collect?Data: Manage critical network data easily via our Aerodrome managed cloud platform In our experience, the OT networks connecting HVAC, metering and sensing devices, and equipment in buildings are often under-provisioned and over-burdened. Founder of BTune by Beca | Helping Buildings Reduce Energy Waste, Running Costs, & Carbon Emissions

It’s interesting to see that most of the issues ASHRAE highlights in this 2024 paper are the exact same as the ones I studied and was hearing about from the industry as early as 2011.?? ? The fact that these issues remain relevant 10+ years later shows that a major challenge for more sustainable buildings isn’t just knowledge or capability; it’s actually taking action.? ? That’s why we’ve designed BTune to make it as easy as possible to do just that. Our tech streamlines delivery of outcomes and our managed service minimises time and effort from buildings teams, all with a pricing model that literally pays for itself…? ? There has never been a better business case to pursue energy efficiency and moving to a proactive maintenance regime. The real question is why wouldn’t you??

BTune Delivery Manager and Deployment Specialist

The latest ASHRAE Position Document on Energy Efficiency reinforces something we see every day at BTune: Energy efficiency is a continuous process, not a one-time project. ASHRAE notes that building systems frequently "deviate significantly from optimal performance, leading to significant and frequent loss in energy efficiency” and that “ongoing commissioning is essential to keep buildings operating efficiently." It’s not enough to rely on quarterly checkups or annual reviews. Sustained energy efficiency requires implementing a continuous process with active management. Here are 4 key takeaways every building operator should keep in mind: 1)?????HVAC Systems are Dynamic: They’re influenced by weather, occupancy, and equipment degradation. Without continuous monitoring and correction, energy waste can creep in unnoticed, leading to higher costs and reduced comfort. 2)?????Load Reduction First Principle: Load reduction through efficiency is the most cost-effective approach to reducing carbon, saving life-cycle costs, and increasing property values, and should precede supply-side approaches or equipment upgrades. 3)?????Leverage Data for Better Decisions: If you’re relying only on benchmarking or periodic audits to keep energy use in check, you’re missing out on data-driven opportunities to detect faults, predict and prioritise maintenance, and identify patterns of inefficiency to reduce waste. 4)?????Resilience Through Efficiency: ASHRAE makes it clear that efficiency isn’t just about cost savings or compliance; it’s about future-proofing with smarter, more resourceful buildings that are better equipped to handle grid demands, aligned with decarbonisation goals, and more resilient to operational disruptions. Whether your goal is reducing emissions, improving your building’s performance rating, or cutting operational costs, it all starts with efficiency as the foundation. With the right tools and a commitment to continuous optimization, facilities teams can shift from fighting daily fires to delivering smarter, more sustainable buildings while actually reducing the demands on their staff. New research published in Science and Technology for the Built Environment (#STBE) introduces a groundbreaking open-source platform for grid-interactive efficient buildings (#GEBs). DOI: https://lnkd.in/exMNGnme #ASHRAE members have free online access here: https://lnkd.in/e9MTX9R4.. While GEBs show promise for building decarbonization and grid support, scalable automation systems for grid-responsive control remain scarce. This research led by Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (authored by Lazlo Paul, Flávia Andrade Pereira, Anand Krishnan Prakash, Sang woo Ham, Jingjuan "Dove" Feng, Rich Brown, and Marco Pritoni) introduces the Open Building Operating System (OpenBOS), a novel software platform utilizing ASHRAE Standard 223P for scalable GEB applications. The study presents significant innovations in building control technology: a vendor-independent software stack, a methodology for deploying portable control applications, and a virtual testing environment for pre-deployment evaluation. The platform's effectiveness is demonstrated through two GEB applications, achieving energy cost reductions of 28% and 23%, with demand savings of 45% and 47% during shed events while maintaining occupant comfort. The research uniquely addresses key gaps in existing platforms by incorporating semantic models, supporting #ASHRAE223P, and providing comprehensive testing capabilities. This work provides a crucial foundation for scaling grid-interactive building controls and offers practical solutions for the widespread implementation of energy-flexible building operations.
