This week in our 'Meet the Clinicians' series is Dr Rob Cann. Rob is a Senior Clinical Lead at Accurx and has worked in healthcare for more than 10 years, first as an NHS ophthalmology doctor and, more recently, in the health tech sector. He is experienced in building and deploying digital health products that are used at scale, and his skill set includes clinical risk management (DCB 0129/CSO trained), clinical products, and commercial partnerships. Prescription 2 in our 5-Point Prescription to Fix the NHS is: Modernise the outpatient model. The outpatients model hasn't changed since the NHS was formed. Patients are added to lists without triage and little care is resolved outside of appointments. The routine booking of follow-up appointments results in low-value ‘no change, see you in six months’ reviews. And when patients do need additional care, they are unable to contact the right services. Modernising the model means delivering more care outside of appointments, which would reduce the waiting list and allow patients to receive timely care. I was thrilled to join this fascinating event last night, featuring an esteemed panel including rachel sylvester, Dr Nikita Kanani MBE, Samantha Jones OBE, Jonathan Ashworth and Jacob Haddad Accurx The discussion was engaging and insightful, delving into the barriers and opportunities for innovation, the pivotal role of communities, and the importance of keeping the individual - the citizen - at the core of any change and design. I left feeling unusually optimistic about the future of the NHS and energized by the task ahead to drive and support positive change.

Prescription 1 in our 5-Point Prescription to Fix the NHS is: Spread Modern GP Access to all practices. Much of general practice still follows an outdated model where the bulk of patient care is delivered within 10 minute appointments. With increased demand, more complex healthcare needs and workload from other care settings, this is no longer sustainable. Neither is it necessary, since many patient issues can be resolved outside of appointments. The government will only be able to restore continuity of care and end the 8am rush if all of general practice is able to transition to a model where practice staff can deliver care outside of 10-minute appointments.
