Lufkin, Angelina County, Texas— 2/27/2025 – 3/2/2025 Dear neighbors, we know folks in Angelina County look out for one another, that’s why we are sharing info about the risks a #measles outbreak could cause. With new cases in West Texas & one recorded death you may ask: Is our community ready if measles comes here? Measles is a virus & spreads through the air; it can survive in a room or public space hours after the infected person leaves. Measles can move fast through schools, churches & businesses, exposing many people to the virus before we even know it’s here. Measles starts with fever, cough & runny nose symptoms before a rash appears. Measles can lead to pneumonia, brain swelling & even death, especially in children & those with weak immune systems. There is no cure for measles. What Happens If Measles Hits Our County? ? Unvaccinated students may be sent home for at least 21 days. ? Parents may miss work to stay home with kids. ? Families may have to travel outside of town for specialized treatment. ? Infants are at high risk. Babies under 12 months are too young to be vaccinated & depend on the rest of us to keep them safe. What Can We All Do? Let’s work together to keep our community strong. ??Make sure your family is protected. Check your child’s vaccine records. If they haven’t had both doses of #MMR, schedule a #vaccination appointment. ??Turn to experts for reliable medical info on measles & vaccines. ACCHD has protected the health of our community for more than 50 years. ??Don't wait to get care; measles moves fast. Clinics & hospitals take precautions to protect patients, so if you or someone you know has been exposed to the virus, seek the care you need. What is ACCHD Doing? We are working to protect our community against a harmful and potentially deadly measles outbreak, by providing accurate info & access to life-saving Measles/Mumps/Rubella (MMR) vaccinations to uninsured/underinsured/Medicaid/CHIP children & uninsured adults. Insured individuals should consult their family physician. The Immunization dept. is open 7:30am-4pm, Mon-Thurs. Rosalind McAdams was a tireless advocate for public health in East Texas, and her former colleagues here at Angelina County and Cities Health District remember her fondly and miss her terribly. During her 27 years as financial director for ACCHD, Rosalind touched the lives of many and made an immeasurable impact on public health outreach in East Texas. She was a wonderful mentor and a devoted friend, and her dedication to her community inspired generations of health care professionals. Rosalind understood the importance of our mission, and over the course of her career she worked diligently with her team to secure and sustain funding from a variety of state, public and private sources. She made overcoming obstacles look easy and seemingly worked miracles to make sure ACCHD had the resources necessary to serve families across East Texas. After retiring from ACCHD, she took her passion for public service to the Alabama Coushatta Tribe of Texas, where she served as Tribal Health Director of the Chief Kina Health Clinic. While we mourn her loss, our hearts are filled with gratitude as we remember her kindness, her professionalism and her passion.

Wear long sleeves and pants when outdoors. ?Use insect repellent with DEET or picaridin. ?Avoid peak mosquito hours (dawn and dusk). ?Get rid of standing water around your home. Symptoms to Watch For: ?? Itchy Bumps:?Mosquito bites leave itchy bumps on your skin. Resist the urge to scratch! ??Fever:?If you develop a fever after a bite, seek medical attention. ??Headache & Fatigue:?These could be signs of arboviral infections.
