  • This is disgraceful that this is happening with an organization who is hosting an “accessibility” conference. Accessibility includes all types of disabilities.

You wouldn't believe me if I told you this. I am consistently told I am not wanted somewhere. My colleague and I, both of whom are Deaf, paid $1,595 to attend an upcoming accessibility conference. Upon requesting interpreters, we were told that providing interpreters would induce a "financial burden" upon the conference... a conference that charges $1,595 for registration and accepts corporate sponsorships. The founder of this accessibility conference then proceeded to tell me that because of these limitations, my colleagues and I would need to share our interpreters at the conference thereby stripping us of the equitable opportunity to freely participate in the breakouts of a conference we paid for. While attempting to request interpreters for this same conference last year, my colleague was told "this is an accessibility conference", as though Deaf people do constitute members of the disability constituency. What was even more disappointing is that this conference is in October. Rather than seek sponsorship opportunities so that Deaf & Hard of Hearing people can be invited to the table, we are offered a refund and an opportunity to disinvite ourselves to the conference. If Disability:IN can charge a registration of $1,200 and still manage to provide ample coverage, any other accessibility conference should be able to as well. I share this message not to drag a person or an entity through the mud but to show the world that this is me. This is my life. My community is consistently shunted from opportunities to network, to grow, to thrive because of people like this.. even in the accessibility space. Because there are so many actors who use the guise of accessibility to advance their own agenda while selectively choosing who they will invite to the table. I want this to change. We deserve to be invited to the dance floor, too.? #accessibility #disabilityrights #inclusion

    • The message is from an email that reads:

"I apologize for the delay in reviewing last week's emails. Thank you for providing claerity on the meeting requirements; I now have a better understanding.

Allow me to explain that [redacted] has been my personal endeavor for the past five years, and I've managed it alongside five part-time independent contractors out of sheer passion.

Not a single dollar of compensation to me has been taken during this time.

While we would greatly appreciate having more deaf & hard of hearing attendees at the event, unfortunately, we did not include the associated costs in the registration. As a result, it poses a financial challenge.

I am currently exploring the possibility of securing grant funding from the county, similar to what we successfully obtained for our last event in [redacted]. Regardless of the outcome, we are committed to having two ASL interpreters available.

If you prefer, you can cancel your registration, and we will issue a refund.
